“Dragons?” I asked, perplexed. “As in, more than one bonded to him?”

Kingston nodded, but something told me he had already known that.

“How was that even possible?” I challenged. “Yes, Dragons can feel all of us, and there is nothing more powerful than their instincts, but an actual bond is only formed between one man and one Dragon. Luna bonded to me, which means that even if she can feel someone else’s emotions, she is still linked to me. She can’t create that kind of connection with anyone else. Only she and I are one.”

“I know…” He nodded, like that should answer my question. “That iswhythe Harbinger of Justice was so powerful.” The light changed in his eyes, urgency gleaming inside him. “You say the ring glowed for his son. Do you realize what this means?”

My heart lodged in my throat when realization dawned on me. “It not only glowed, it helped him heal.”

“It wasn’t the ring,” my guardian whispered, astounded.

“It was the Dragons,” I gasped, falling back on my ass. “The kids… Vyper and Draco connected to him through the ring’s magic.” Yet, my brow furrowed in confusion. “I don’t understand, that still doesn’t make sense. How would that help him heal? All these beautiful creatures can do is feel what we feel and help us, protect us, fly with us. They have never, NEVER, been able to heal someone.” I shook my head adamantly.

“I know. There’s no logical explanation for me either, but if he shares his father’s energy and Dragons can connect to him—” A new thought entered his mind, and dread filled his honey eyes. “If he has that terrible illness you speak of, and the kids had somehow begun to help him heal…” His voice vanished.

My hand slowly rose to my mouth. “Gods… And I brought Vyper and Draco back.” Fear slammed into my chest, chilling me to my core. “That’s why they didn’t want to leave. They didn’t want to leave him!”

Getting to my feet, I ran back to the table, grabbing my spear.

“I have to go back, Kingston. I have to go back!” I yelled, anxiety stealing my sanity, and I ran out of the room with my guardian on my heels.

Our horses soared out of the Lost Kingdom, pieces of grass and soil exploding under their hooves with each strike to the earth. The sun rose in the distance as we raced towards the carven, each blow almost as strong as the frantic beating of my heart against my chest.

“What are you going to do?” Kingston asked over the rustling wind and galloping thunder between us.

Both fear and anticipation churned within my gut with his question.

“The only thing I can!” I yelled back. “I’m going to bring Braxton with me. If nothing else, to save his life.”
