He was probably scolding me for being where I was not supposed to be, as Kingston had.

Swallowing, I pulled my attention from him, and prayed he wouldn’t try to eat me while I wasn’t looking, continuing my way. The phraseall dogs look like their ownersdanced in my mind and I wondered if the same thing applied to Dragons. Not that anyone here could own any of these creatures, and they were definitely not pets.

My head snapped to the front when Vyper stepped out of his lair, and I realized I was almost there. Quickening my pace, I made my way to him, but something lurked in the shadows along the left curve of the honeycombs, and everything inside me urged me to look. Unlike the other caves, no creature peaked out of it, judging me, studying me, or otherwise, but two glowing red orbs that swayed like fire itself trained on me.

A cold shiver shot down my spine when my gaze connected with his, making me shudder, but I couldn’t look away. The orangey-red glow flickered when he blinked from the depths of his cave, but then it grew small as he retreated until I could no longer see it.

What the fuck was that?

I didn’t think I wanted to know the answer.

Shaking myself out of the brief trance the mysterious creature had captured me in, I took the last steps to Vyper’s lair, finally stepping inside.

Draco bounced on his heels from excitement when he saw me, screeching towards the back of his lair as though he was calling someone, but Vyper was nowhere to be found. A smile filled with curiosity and excitement tilted my lips while Draco made its way to me, and I lifted both arms to stroke him the moment he reached me. His head lowered when he stopped in front of me, but before my hands could land on his scaly skin, something crashed against his side, bumping him out of the way.

Vyper smirked, taking Draco’s place while his brother yelped, rolling to a standing position on the other side.

“You are such an asshole,” I laughed, stroking Vyper’s forehead first, then faced a grumbling and huffing Draco, who made his way towards me.

A snorting sound vibrated through Vyper’s throat, and his chest quivered.

“I’m sorry,” I murmured to Draco while I gave him extra love, scratching the side of his jaw. His eyes closed in absolute delight, and I rubbed the top of his nose too, caressing everything I could reach. He was like a puppy.

Finally pulling away, Draco turned and jumped his brother, wrestling him in revenge. Laughter escaped me again, seeing them roll around, trying to bite each other as puppies did when they playfully fought each other.

Yep, seemed like brothers to me.

A thunderous bark suddenly rushed through the space, making the walls tremble, and the kids froze mid-bite—swiftly scrambling off each other. My head snapped up to catch the instant a magnificent purple creature stepped out of the shadows. The female Dragon strutted towards me like I imagined a queen would. If their species had such a thing.

I knew she was a female, because the way the kids stopped their fighting said that was a mother’s bark. Nothing put the fear of God in a kid like a pissed off mom, who’d run out of patience.

The breath lodged in my throat, but it wasn’t exactly from fear. Her presence was striking, awe-inspiring, and intimidating all at once while she moved towards me with long and elegant strides. Her scales glimmered under the moonlight seeping from above, in slightly gradient purple hues that extended from light to dark along her entire form, darkening in some parts until it became almost black.

Two black horns extended downward from her chin, which along with her mouth, nose and forehead, resembled the beak of a bird—like Kingston’s Dragon had. Except, in her case, beautiful purple scales covered every inch, making them look like they were wrapped in skin instead of being made of bone. Two longer, black scaled-horns extended from her forehead towards the back, and what I could only describe as black hair fell from the top of her head all the way to her neck.

She was scary as hell, yes, but she was also stunning.

Silverish-grey eyes focused on me when she stopped before me, filling with both wonder and intrigue as she regarded me. The female Dragon inhaled deeply, catching my scent, and a satisfied hum rumbled through her chest. When her head lowered, her gaze bore into mine, and a part of me felt like she could see my soul. Kindness filled her eyes in a way that reminded me of Evie, and that stirred something inside me.

Slowly lifting a hand, I caressed the bridge of her nose, marveling at how soft her scaly skin felt under my touch.

Her tongue suddenly shot out and she licked the length of me, knocking me back on my ass. Shock gripped me until I recognized the mischievous gleam in her eyes, and she smirked. I couldn’t help but laugh while Vyper and Draco snickered beside her. Now I knew who Vyper took after…

Turning, she licked her kids too, grooming them, then did a double take on me. All amusement left her, and her eyelids closed for a moment, like she could feel something in me. When they reopened, she inched closer, laying on the ground, and the next second, my vision changed.

I saw myself through her eyes.

My silhouette was engulfed by a soft golden gleam, swaying along my skin as she glanced at me through her night vision, but what I found behind me shook me to my core. Dozens of Dragons hovered in the air just outside, watching me, with more leaving the honeycombs to come here—almost seeming compelled to do so.

A few landed inside the cave and I whirled around to see them with my own eyes. Their heads lowered, smelling me like Vyper’s mother had, and they too inched closer.

Breaths quickened in my chest as I watched more and more creatures fly to me, congregating until their wings brushed each other’s with every flap, and I couldn’t see the palace carved out of stone, or the city below us anymore. The fiery eyes appeared again in the distant darkness, but unlike the rest, the creature didn’t fly towards me. Whatever that was.

Only Dragons. Majestic, transcendent, fire breathing gods, and I couldn’t fight the perplexing feeling that they had somehow known me all along, and they were welcoming me home.

The flicker of a torch suddenly appeared to my left, and I glanced over to find Kingston standing by the entrance.

He looked as shocked as I was.
