Everyone around me screeched, scrambling away, but there was no chance in hell I could catch that thing without carving my hands open. It was coming at me blade first, like he was hunting me or something.

I jumped out of the way a second before it impaled me, watching it pierce the ground right next to me instead, until only the wooden handle was visible. WTF? Swallowing, I lifted startled eyes at him.

Kingston shook his head, sighing like he was stuck with the most incompetent and clumsy trainee in the history of this realm. He stopped a few feet away. Chuckles escaped Asher and the others, probably perceiving the same, but they shut up the moment their chief glared at them.

“You,” he called to me, motioning to the weapon. “Pick that up, and do not let it out of your sight from this day forward. It’s yours now.”

“What?” I blurted, stopping him mid-stride—he had begun to walk away.

His intense gaze bore into mine as he faced me once more. “The spear is yours. You will breathe, eat, sleep, and shower with it. You understand?”

“What if he has to pee?” Asher asked, clearly mocking him, and Kingston’s eyes became lighter with humor, but he still scowled at me.

“He has two hands,” he retorted and whirled around, walking past his warriors. “This one is mine. I will train him myself.”

All faces paled around me, and Asher shot after him. “Are you sure, Chief? I can do it if you would like?”

“No. He’s mine.”

The look on Asher’s face said I needed luck to survive that.

“Well, are you coming or not?” Kingston shouted, already halfway up the training grounds. “I don’t have all day.”

Trying to figure out if this was a good or bad thing, I gripped the spear and pulled it free from the ground with far less effort that it should have taken.

“Good luck!” Charlotte and Edward waved at me.

With a tight-lipped smile, I began to walk after Kingston, but stopped the moment Asher gripped my arm.

“This is an honor,” he conveyed, his eyes urging me to understand that. “Do not over think things, and do everything he tells you. Pay attention. Don’t miss a single word, but most of all, don’t miss any of his actions. His movements will speak to you louder than his voice. Let your body learn before your mind does.” He sighed as though he wanted to advise me in many other things and was trying to decide which were the most important. “Follow your instincts, he’ll appreciate that most of all.”

“Thank you.”

Smiling, he patted my back and sent me after his chief.
