I didn’t know what kind he was—he might have been a Demon Dragon for all I knew—but one thing was for certain, he was fucking magnificent.

A rumbling sound travelled through his chest as he carefully observed me, as though trying to decipher who and what I was, and his head slightly angled while his nostrils flared… he was smelling me. The curious sound soon turned into a full-blown roar, and his flaming eyes snapped to the entrance of his lair.

I followed his gaze to find Kingston finally arriving… to save me? It didn’t look like he was exactly in a position of power there, but I figured it was best not to mention that.

Slowly, he lifted the hand that held his spear—which was fully extended and ready for a fight—and crouched, placing it on the ground. Kingston’s movements were careful and measured. His gaze fell from the Dragon, like he was submitting to him, and I had to admit the sight of a man like the freaking Chief of Battle doing that, shook me to my core.

When my attention returned to the Demon Dragon, he lifted his head, accepting the warrior’s declaration of peace—not that it meant he was happy to have him there. Fiery eyes focused on me again.

“Donotlook him in the eyes.” Kingston’s whispered warning came too late, we had already engaged in a staring contest before he arrived, but it was probably not the time to tell him that. “Crawl to me as slowly as you can. Do not make any sudden movements.”

Lowering my eyes from the beast, I carefully turned, and began to make my way along the wall towards Kingston. The huffing and puffing behind me was hard to miss as I crawled, but I didn’t dare look back. Wild heartbeats boomed in my ears, and I had probably stopped breathing at some point, but I followed Kingston’s instructions to a T.

The heated breath of the monster reached my arms while his head followed my retreat; I could feel him watching me. Embers swirled against my skin at one point and my ears rang with the clicking sound of his rumble so close, but I forced my limbs to keep going, until I made it to the bronzed skin giant. Standing as gently as he had crouched, Kingston pulled me up with him, grabbing his spear again.

Relief coursed through me mercilessly when Vyper came into view, landing next to us. His wing lowered for us to climb on his back, but getting us out of there didn’t seem enough for him. Lifting into the air, he shot a ball of fire at the freaking Demon Dragon.

Every cell of my body froze, expecting retaliation. Vyper was either fearless or fucking crazy.

The fire monster snorted at him loudly—as though saying ‘bitch, please’—and retreated inside the lair until darkness swallowed him whole.
