“And?”

A heavy breath sunk his chest, and his troubled gaze returned to me.

“When I was training with Kingston, a memory of those days awoke. Suddenly, it was like I was playing with Dad again. Every movement Kingston made, I anticipated because I had gone through the motions before, and I already knew them by heart. Muscle memory kicked in, and I was able to defend myself, even landing a few blows. It was amazing, but the realization also blindsided me. I didn’t see Kingston’s next move.”

“I’m glad nothing bad happened, and Vyper saved you.”

My fingers caressed Braxton’s jaw, silently calling him to me, and he leaned closer until our lips met. He took as much comfort from me as I sought from him, and nestled me close to his neck once the kiss ended.

“Kingston told you Vyper saved me?”

“He said Vyper flew you to the ground.” My eyes narrowed as I judged his reaction. “Is that not true?”

“Technically, yes.” He slightly cringed but I wasn’t sure he was aware of it.

“I know you two are hiding something, but I will find out anyway.”

His lips tilted into a mischievous smirk that reminded me of Vyper’s, and he stole one more kiss from me, not saying another word about it. Holding me, he gently turned our bodies to lay on our side, until we were face to face.

“Evie, will you please tell me about my parents now?”

My belly clenched with the request, both the longing in his voice, and the way his eyes had shone so brightly while talking about his father tore at my soul a little. The Harbinger of Justice was Braxton’s hero, just like he had once been to us, and I couldn’t take that away from him. Knowing what his father had done would destroy him, I couldn’t be the one to do it.

I wouldn’t be the one to rip Braxton’s heart to pieces, so I decided to tell him only half the truth.

“Of course…”
