“You mean with the Demon Dragon coming to save me, or with the others?”

“With all of them,” Kingston answered sternly. “They all seem attracted to you in a way I’ve never seen—” He stopped himself, and the manner in which he glanced towards the window said that wasn’t entirely true.

“Not with anyone?”

A heavy sigh left my guardian’s chest, and he shook his head, his gaze falling to his hands. “I knew a man with a similar affinity for those creatures once. They were drawn to him more than anyone else, but they never behaved like they do with you. When you are close, they act as though they recognize something inside you. I don’t understand it, and I don’t like what I can’t understand.”

“Neither do I,” Braxton admitted, curiosity growing in his eyes. “Was it my father? The man you talk about?”

“Yes,” Kingston answered, not shying away from the question. “It was.”

“Did you hate him too?”

My chest constricted with the question, and the ache that shone in my guardian’s eyes said his did too. “I actually admired him for a long time…” he confessed, but immediately closed himself off to the subject. “I don’t hate you, Braxton; I am cautious of you.”

“I would never hurt Evanna. Or do anything to hurt anyone here.”

The resolution in Braxton’s words caused goosebumps to rise along my arms, and I saw Kingston slowly nod. “I realized that today, but it is my nature.”

“I get it. It’s your job to protect her.”

Tears stung my eyes with his statement, because I knew exactly what Kingston’s answer would be. I knew the pain he carried inside.

“It is far more than that… I wasn’t always the man you see before you, and Evanna is my last chance at redemption.”
