Grunting, I once again pulled myself onto the ledge at the bottom of Evie’s floor, and stood on it. My hands reached for the carved decorations on the wall above me, and pulled me up as I stepped awkwardly onto the corbel on my right—my other foot dangling against the wall.

When I reached the window, I peeked into Evie’s room, trying to make sure she was alone this time. The lights were off, which meant she was probably already sleeping, but I’d be damned if I was going to climb back down for the second time tonight without talking to her. I glanced around for another place to put my left foot, finding no support, which meant I was going to have to hop onto the windowsill and scramble my way into her room.

Here goes nothing…

With a readying breath, I thrust myself up with all my might, but my stomach slid against the windowsill, and I flipped upside down, crashing head-first into her room. I fell awkwardly onto my back.

“Braxton!” Evie gasped, jumping off the bed and rushing to my side. She knelt over me, hands swiftly checking my face and chest to make sure I was okay.

Struggling to breathe, my night vision focused on her, carving her out of the absolute darkness.

“Are you okay?” Evie cupped my face, yet I was helpless but to look at her. Her skin, lustrous hair and eyes, even her lips sparkled with the golden magic of my Dragon sight.

This is your chance! My mind screamed.

Tell her saying ‘I love you’ was a mistake.

You weren’t thinking.

You didn’t mean it.

Take it back. Take it back. Take it back!!

“I love you.”

Damn it!

Cradling her neck, I pulled her to me and claimed her lips, letting the wild emotions inside me run free. As they did, I realized how wrong I had been. It wasn’t a mistake. It wasn’t too soon. What I felt for her was the most perfect thing I had ever experienced in my life.

I belonged with Evie.

“You don’t have to say it back. Not if you are not ready,” I whispered against her lips, kissing her again, but she pulled away.

“Are you certain of what you feel?”

The worry in her gaze made my chest constrict, and I blamed myself for letting her see my internal battle with the truth. Sitting up, I caressed her jaw with my thumb, allowing the love I felt for her to inundate my being. I wanted her to see it in my eyes.

“I love you, Evanna Skyborne. You are it for me… You are everything.”

A brilliant smile slowly captured her lips, tears brimming in her eyes. “I love you too, Braxton Skystorm.” She pressed her mouth to mine, and I gave into her, arms wrapping around her waist and back when she straddled me.

Our kisses weren’t anything like they had been beforeI love you. Those seemed superficial and shallow compared to the meaning they now carried, and although surreal, I appreciated that.

We indulged in them as I stood, carrying her to the bed and kicking off my boots. I let her undress me. Getting under the sheets, I nestled her into my chest, content to just have her in my arms again.

“Braxton, I—”

“Did you know about—?” We both spoke at the same time, and I chuckled, leaning away to glance down at her. “You go.”

Evie shook her head. “No, it’s okay. What were you going to say?”

“Did you know about Tharion being my father’s Dragon?”

Blinking, her brow furrowed, showing both the confusion and surprise she felt with the news. “No. I—Kingston never told me,” she admitted. “Most of us hadn’t been born, or were mere babes when your father was here. We all thought Fire Fury had never had a soul mate before. We believed he was a wild Dragon…” A sigh of disappointment escaped her chest. “Kingston kept that from me too.”

“I’m sorry. I’m sure he had his reasons…” I offered, not wanting to cause any problems between her and her guardian. Anyone could tell with one glance how much the chief loved her. “Maybe he didn’t want to complicate your life with unnecessary things.”
