“Please…”I begged one last time, feeling my muscles begin to tingle, quivering against the evil magic, but not enough for me to break free of its grip.

A new thread abruptly appeared in the darkness, zipping towards me like lightning and forming a brand new connection. Unexpectedly, a bout of strength slammed into my chest like a lightning bolt, giving me enough vigor to snap the mystical bindings.

There was no time to wonder whether or not this would work in the mind meld Raithian had created, so I just acted.

My left hand seized his wrist, pulling his touch away from my forehead, at the same time that I reached behind me with the other. His gaze snapped down to my grip, shocked to find I could move again, but something else halted him. “Where did you get that ring?”

“Get out of my mind!” I roared instead, swinging the Dragon claw dagger against his neck. The blade caught his skin, slicing it open. His green power exploded between us, and sent us both hurling back from the ripple.

The instant our backs crashed against the dark walls, we appeared back on the smoke staircase outside the castle.

Raithian’s hand flew to his neck, and he held it before his eyes, blood dripping through his fingers. “How did you do that?!” he demanded with a horror-stricken snarl.

Unfortunately, my dagger caught him under the jaw, so I hadn’t done enough damage to kill him. Sword in my hold again, I thrust it into his gut, my blade hitting only swirling smoke.

He disappeared.

I fell to the ground when the fog forming the stairs drifted, and saw the sentries around me stagger back, shocked at what I had done to their king.

“Let’s go!” Kingston’s command reached me, and I stood to see Spartan, Tharion, and Luna freed from the curse. Turning, I ran towards Asher and Evie, who were together on the other side of the grounds.

My sword clashed with a few men on the way, but most of them stepped back when they saw me coming. Nudging Evie onto her ride, Kingston ordered Asher to go with her, and motioned for Nikau to get on Spartan with him. The sight of them retreating urged me to move faster, but something else caught my attention.

“Nikau, watch out!” I yelled, seeing him climb Spartan’s wing after Kingston, but I was too late. A short sword shot through the air and straight into his side.

“Aaah!” he cried out, falling backwards.

Kingston caught his arm before he dropped, hauling him onto his ride’s back.

Sending one last stream of fire that incinerated the man who threw the sword, Tharion snatched me off the ground, and jumped into the tunnel after the others, melting the entrance closed.
