“I know you are… but I need to think of them.” She pointed to her hidden kingdom again. “I was born and raised to think only of them. To make sure they are safe, to protect them, and give my life for them if it is needed.” With a burdened breath, she wrapped her arms around herself, closing off to me. “You need to be mindful of what your powers represent, and do whatever it takes to control them.”

“I will. I swear to you, today willneverhappen again.”

“I hope so, because if that is the man you will be with these powers, then you cannot be the man who stands beside me when I’m queen.”

Her words punched the air out of me.

“Don’t say that, baby… You know me better than anyone.” Closing the space between us, I gently pulled her into my arms, pressing my forehead to hers.

“What I know is that my guard, and even Lachlan, were prepared to kill Venom in order to save everyone, but I’m not sure that if tomorrow you were in the same position, you would choose us over the Dragons.”

“Of course I would choose all of you!” I assured her without hesitation.

Yet, as I did, a glimpse from that moment came back to haunt me. When I saw the spears aimed at Venom, and our people were running for their lives, my first instinct had been to do something before the warriors could hurt him. Erasing the alarming thought from my mind, I brushed my lips against hers.

“You are everything, Evanna, and always will be. Please never doubt that...” My chest burned as I kissed her, but I could taste the pain on her lips.

My impetuousness and mistakes today had hurt her, and I hated that most of all. I also knew that anger and hurt could sometimes make us say things we didn’t mean, so I decided to step away. Evie needed time to heal, or calm… I didn’t know what else she needed, but I sensed that staying wouldn’t help.

Kissing a tear off her cheek, I stepped back, and left.
