He chuckled, but didn’t answer.

Walking towards the back, Skylar pulled a chain from inside her overalls, and used the key that hung from it to open a cabinet. She took out a long leather wrapped bundle from it, and brought it to me.

“Take this one so you can continue training, and attend the duel while I take care of yours.” Unwrapping it on her desk, she handed me another masterpiece.

It was a stunning weapon, as balanced and light as my sword, and definitely worthy of a museum. Except, this one seemed like it had never been used. The blade shone so brightly under the lights that the steel almost looked like glass. Still, it wasn’t my sword, and I wasn’t sure I should be leaving mine here.

“Maybe I should just wait, and bring mineaftermy fight with Lachlan.”

“If he survives,” Asher jested.

“Of course, if he survives,” Skylar agreed, lips twitching, but I ignored them. “Don’t worry, your sword is in good hands,” she assured. “I’m going to clean, sharpen, and polish it, leaving it as good as new. I promise. Also, the one I’m giving you was made with the same techniques, so you won’t even notice the difference. Just make sure to bring it back please.”

“If he survives,” Asher reminded.

“If he survives,” she admitted.

I narrow my eyes at them. “I’m glad you are both having a blast at my expense.”

Asher grinned, unashamedly, but it kind of gave me a sense of relief. If my commander was making jokes about it, it meant he believed I could come out unscathed from that duel, so I decided to focus on that.

“That is my sword by the way,” Skylar informed, making my eyes widen.

“You are giving meyoursword?”

“Yes, that is how much I trust you. I am giving youmy swordto help you come out victorious. So, you better bring it back after the duel.”

“If he survi—”

“Shut up!” I threw the leather wrap at Asher’s face.

Laughter erupted from him while he stepped back, though he caught it effortlessly. “Let’s go. It’s late and you have to rest for tomorrow’s training.”

Wrenching the leather from his grasp, I placed it on Skylar’s sword the same way she had it, securing it. “Thank you, Skylar. I will not let you down.”

“I’m counting on that.” She kissed Asher good night and we were on our way… until her voice echoed after us.

“But if you die, can I keep your sword?!”
