“I’m sorry.” Braxton offered, shaking his arm until the scales disappeared, replaced by soft, tanned skin. “Did it burn you?”

“No, I…” I swallowed, touching his arm again. “I was just startled, that's all.” My hand lifted to his cheek, caressing it slowly. “You really are part Dragon, aren’t you?”

“I’d say ‘I’m afraid so’, but honestly, I kind of love it.”

At that I had to laugh.

Unfortunately, the mirth vanished too soon from his eyes, and he briefly glanced at Kingston. “You knew who my mother was.”

It wasn’t a question, but my guardian nodded, nonetheless. The remorse I saw earlier recaptured his expression.

“I’m sorry for not saying anything. At first, I wasn’t sure what kind of man you were, or if I could even trust you. Everything was so—”

“Complicated. I know. It’s okay, Chief.”

“What are you two talking about?” The anxiousness growing in me filtered through my words. Something was going on, and I could feel its darkness gripping us all.

Focusing on me, Brax pulled something from his back pocket, placing it in my hand. “This is my mother’s letter. I think you should read it.”
