A burdened breath sunk his chest, but he nodded. “Of course. But can you please give her something for me?”

“Yes, anything.”

With my answer, he whirled around and rushed to the small desk on the corner, opening the drawer to extract a piece of parchment and a pencil. He took his time writing the note, thinking carefully about what he wanted to say to her, and a small gasp left me when I saw him prick his finger with the letter opener, using his blood to imprint his thumb onto the paper.

Finally signing it, he folded the sheet and added a wax seal. “Here, please give this to her from me. If she doesn’t forgive me after this… then she never will.”

“Braxton,” I sighed. “She has nothing to forgive. You are not responsible for the death of her family. You had just been born—”

“I know,” he interjected. “But in her heart, I am responsible for her loss. And no one can tell her how to process her pain. She became my friend too, and I care for her, so I’m going to do everything possible for her to forgive me.”

Warmth filled my heart with his words. Braxton was worth the wait. “And that is why I love you.” Wrapping my arms around him, I stole a kiss from him.

“The only reason?” he challenged, kissing my neck.

“There might be something else, but nothing comes to mind right now… Ahh!” The squeal left me when he bit my neck and I pushed him away, hearing him laugh. “Go change,” I ordered, smoothing my skirt and top. “We are late for breakfast and Kingston is going to be extra cranky during your training.”

“No, please no.”

Chuckling, I left him to get ready and joined the others outside. Today marked the start of preparations for my crowning ceremony next week, and I had so much to get done.
