“How long has it been since you’ve slept properly?”

He shook his head. “Days. And you?”

“Days. I couldn’t, not with what was happening. I’ve been so worried.”

About me? Or wondering if I was a killer?James shook his head to clear it and stood up straight. Now that she was here, he felt near collapse. “Come to bed?”

She nodded.

“Stay with me—more than just a night. Stay another day.” He heard how dark his voice sounded, regretted that he didn’t know how to make it sound more appealing.

“I was hoping you’d ask. Yes. I’ve made arrangements.”

He groaned. “How long have we wondered what it would be like not to separate before dawn?”

“Since the first night,” she whispered.

Upstairs, they stripped nude without pretense and fell into the bed where he’d tossed and turned alone this week. His head barely dented the pillow when sleep began to take him. He curled around Clara’s soft body, moaning as he wrapped around her.

He fought to stay awake another moment, enjoying her skin against his. Her deep sigh sounded like relief and pleasure in one.

With his last strength, he nuzzled into her plaited hair, inhaling her scent, and knowing he was finally safe, he fell headlong into slumber.
