The simple thought was accompanied by a powerful resolve that complemented the sense of well-being the hammam had instilled.

In an instant, sheknewthat whatever her circumstances in the future, she had to ensure that Violet House’s operations were secure.

Even her brother did not know of the LLS. However much she trusted David, she couldn’t jeopardize Violet House should he disapprove. He was so occupied with his enterprise—and generous with her to a fault—that he paid no heed to how she managed her allowance.

A husband…that was a far more dangerous proposition. She felt guilty enough about keeping David in the dark. How could she manage with a husband? Even if he was inattentive to how she spent her time, undoubtedly her funds would be under greater scrutiny.

“I may have erred with my plan to marry after my adventure.”

Stella blinked, then searched her face.

“Look at them, Stella. No one can interfere with Violet House. Everyone else has let these women down. I shan’t abandon them. I shan’t allow anyone to stop my support of the LLS.”

“But if you marry…”

“Any candidate for matrimony must give me his word that he won’t interfere with my charitable endeavors.”

“However will you find someone who approves?”

“Perhaps I won’t.” She sipped the sharp lemon shrub, waiting for fear to register. Had she truly resolved to be a spinster for life?

Perhaps.Better a spinster than marrying at any cost—especially since it’s these women who would pay the greatest price.
