Aaron Leep is one of my father’s lieutenants, but he has recently been assigned to my sister’s protection detail because he could be trusted. I’m thinking that faith might have been misplaced, considering there’s no fucking sign of him.

“And where is the prick?” He’s not supposed to leave her fucking side. I grate my teeth and clench my jaw.

“Relax. He’s down in the lobby. I hardly need protection here, Luke.”

Luke….

That name has always been one given to me by my family, but now it just reminds me of Alice. I love the way it sounds on her lips when I’m inside her. Fuck. I need to find her. I need to see her again and experience the highs she gives me when we are together. She’s like a natural drug. One I can’t get enough of.

“You are being careful, aren’t you?”

My heart stutters a little at the thought she might be taking risks, giving Aaron the runaround. I know what it’s like to be young and wanting to experience freedom. I was given that opportunity, but Aurelia will never have it. It’s too dangerous to allow her off the reins. She is our weakest link, the thing that can be used against us to hurt our empire. I’m not sure if she understands how much sway she holds over her siblings. It would break the three of us if anything happened to her.

“Don’t worry. Your little guard has kept me locked up tight.”

At least Aaron is doing that part of his job well.

“Don’t take any risks.”

She peers up at me, her brows drawing together. “Is something happening?”

Something is always happening, but I don’t tell her that. I don’t want her to ever be scared. Everything we do is to ensure the survival of the family so that Aurelia can have a good life. I lean down and kiss her head, smelling her shampoo and her perfume. It is a scent that is so familiar, so her, that it makes me smile. “Nothing at all,” I lie. If she knows our mother is orchestrating two weddings behind the scenes, it will only upset her. “Be careful with Charlotte. She is in a meddling mood.”

Aurelia rolls her eyes. “When isn’t she?”

My sister’s right, so I just laugh as I make my way to the lift, giving my sister a wave before I push the button to call it to the floor. I’m not particularly keen to make someone my wife, but like my brothers, I will do what I must to protect the Fraser name—even if it means marrying a total stranger. Two weeks ago that would have been easy, but now a certain blonde angel commands my thoughts, and I find myself wishing life was different and that she could be mine.

The desire is a foolish want, and one I can’t have. It’s time to put Alice out of my mind and focus on the future with Sariah Easton because if I know one thing about my mother, it’s that she will always get her way. So I will marry the Easton girl, no matter my thoughts on it.
