“True, but it doesn’t matter. We were put together and I take that seriously. You are mine to take care of.”

For a moment I get lost in my thoughts, wondering what he’s done in the name of his family. I know what I was asked to do in the name of mine, but truthfully, I don’t think I can.

Kane hasn’t been the monster I expected. Not to me anyway, though I know he’s capable of terrible things. I keep that in the back of my mind always. I’m sharing my life with a predator, though I’m not easy prey. As nice as he is now, that can change. Men like Kane are built differently. They have a switch that can be flicked in a split second, and the anger that burns inside them is not something that can be controlled.

I’ve seen my father flip that switch more times than I can count over the years. I’ve seen his rage pour out of him like a rapidly flowing river.

Failing my father leaves an empty feeling in my gut, a heavy weight I can’t disperse, but going against this man, one who has embraced our marriage and already shows he cares, would be criminal.

“Do you think this can really work?” I ask him in a small voice.

He leans forward and presses a kiss to my mouth. I freeze for a moment before I relax into it. He is confident and assured as his lips move over mine. He’s a man who takes what he wants when he wants. It makes us a good match because I am the same. I’m impulsive, difficult, but I feel like Kane will manage those parts of my personality that other men would find troublesome.

He deepens the kiss, moving it from testing to something else. Something that makes my toes curl inside my shoes. Every inch of me feels electric, something I’ve never experienced with another man.

I’m attracted to him.

Even with all the darkness that beats inside him. I know he may not be a man who shows me affection in the usual sense, but he’s definitely let me know he cares. That means something to me.

He’s embraced our marriage with both arms.

He ends the kiss, pulling back and cupping the side of my neck as he presses his forehead to mine.

“I don’t know if we can work, Elena. I just know I would prefer kissing you to fighting with you.”

Tingles build in my belly. I would prefer that too.

“Kane!” a voice screeches from beyond the room.

I jolt, gripping him. What the hell? I wish I had my knife on me, but it’s packed among my things that my father was having sent here.

“Fuck.” Kane looks irritated as he gets to his feet.

“Do we need to hide?”

He snorts and shakes his head. “No one can get into the house without getting past my men. You’re safe here.”

“So that screeching banshee is allowed to be here?” I question.

“That screeching banshee is Gemma.”

Oh.

That explains a lot. I would probably screech too if I were her. They force her to be in the presence of people who remind her of what she lost. Kane presses a kiss to my temple. “Stay here. I won’t be a moment.”

I watch him leave the room, not sure I shouldn’t stand between him and his cousin.

Then the shouting starts.

I don’t hear Kane but a woman’s voice getting louder and louder.

Pushing up from my seat, I make my way to the door and peer around it. Kane is standing in the hallway, a petite woman in front of him. She looks a little like him, the same colouring as my husband, though her hair is long and pulled into a sloppy top knot. Her scrubs are green and fitted, showing off her figure, which is slight.

“I’m tired of being your family’s dog,” she hisses at him.

“You are part of this family too, Gemma.” There is coldness in his voice that makes me shiver.

Gone is the man who was in the room with me moments ago. This is Kane Fraser, syndicate heir.
