“No, we’ll work something out, Aurelia, but we need to put someone trustworthy in place. Someone who will defend you no matter what. We’re not sure who that is yet, but I promise we’re working on it.” He pulls my head down to kiss my hair. “I promise you Charlotte is not going to have any hold over you.”

I hear the front door opening, but since no one seems alarmed, I relax. I understand why when Ryan steps into the kitchen a moment later. He looks handsome today. He’s wearing a dark suit with a white shirt and tie, which is a little loose. My hands itch to straighten it for him, but I’m pretty sure Zeke will murder us both if I touch Ryan.

“Coffee?” Bailey asks.

Ryan shakes his head. “No, thank you, Mrs Fraser.”

His eyes scan the room before falling on me. The conversation fades to the background as I focus on him and the way he’s looking at me. There’s concern in his eyes, but something else, something more.

Heat sizzles between us, and I feel my cheeks warm.

When he tears his gaze away, I finally allow myself to take a breath. Why does he make my stomach fill with butterflies?

As I pass him to go back to the table, his hand skims over my side. His touch is electrifying, and I close my eyes briefly, soaking it in.

It’s a dangerous game for him to play with my brother inches from us, but Zeke doesn’t notice Ryan’s deliberate touch of my arm.

My skin feels heated where his fingers skimmed over me.

I go back to my seat and try to ignore the feel of his eyes on me as I help myself to some toast from the plate in the middle of the table.

He’s interested.

And the thing is, so am I.
