Her head shakes. “It’s fine.”

The doors open, and I lead her out into the corridor. There are two doors on this floor. I head to 7A and hold my hand out to her.

She drops the key into my upturned palm. I unlock the door, and we slip inside. I lock the door behind her.

“Wait here,” I say. “I tell you to run, you go,” I add.

Her brows draw together, a cute little indent appearing between her eyes, but she doesn’t argue with me.

I move through the apartment, checking for unfriendlies. The apartment is large, spacious, and well decorated. There is a seating area with a flat screen, a small kitchen with an island, and a narrow corridor with a few doors off that I assume lead to the bedrooms and bathrooms. It’s clean, well decorated, with windows looking over the city of London. There’s a balcony with double doors and enough space for a table and chairs.

Her brothers did well. This will be okay.

The bedrooms are clean too. Both rooms have their own bathrooms and large walk-in wardrobes. There is also a family bathroom.

There’s no sign of anyone here, so I return to Aurelia.

“It’s safe,” I tell her.

She moves past me to explore her new home. I double check the lock on the front door and relax an iota once we’re ensconced inside.

When I follow Aurelia into the living space, I find her sitting on the sofa, her legs stretched in front of her.

“How much do you think it would cost to have my parents assassinated?” I’m not entirely sure if she’s joking, but I laugh a little anyway.

“I think you’ll find there are plenty of people who would do it for free.”

“Like you?”

Yes.

I huff out a breath. “I’d do whatever is necessary to protect you.”

“Because my brothers ordered you to.”

“Because I care about you.”

Her eyes find mine, and I see the uncertainty in them. “Why?”

That is a difficult question to answer without admitting things to her I’m not sure I can ever admit.

“I’m loyal to your brothers.”

“Just to them?”

“To you too,” I say.

“Why?”

“I don’t know what you’re asking.”

“Why do my brothers gain such loyalty from you? You’d willingly die to save my brother’s life. I don’t understand why.”

“Because Mr Fraser gave me a chance when I needed one.”

She snorts. “You can call him Zeke. He’s not a teacher.” After I got out of the forces, I wasn’t sure where I fit. Zeke hired me as his bodyguard, and slowly, I found my path again. I am grateful to him for that.

“It’s not about that. It’s about respect.”
