“I don’t know about that,” Maia laughed. “How’s working with Blake been so far?”

Rose let out a deep sigh and pushed her fingers through her already rumpled hair. “He’s completely infuriating, entirely inappropriate, and I alternate between wanting to strangle him or myself whenever we speak for more than a few minutes at a time.”

A slow grin spread across Maia’s cheeks. “You like him.”

Eyes wide, she glared at her best friend as heat spread across her cheeks. “Like him?Likehim? Nine times out of ten I want to kill him, and that was before he implied to the press that we were dating. So,no,there’s no liking here.”

Maia laughed and gave her a smirk, sipping the milky coffee she’d left to cool on the coffee table in front of them. “So there’s passion – I bet the sex will be great.”

She gaped at Maia in disbelief. Hadn’t she heard anything she had just said? Blake drove her mad. Her mind unbidden flashed back to the feeling of his mouth against her hand, his palm at the small of her back. She gulped. “There won’t be any sex, Maia. He’s an ass.”

Maia grinned. “Hate-sex is the best kind. Besides, you know I can’t stand Sam most of the time, but she does have a point. How long has it been since you last had sex?”

Rose spluttered, words getting lodged in her throat. Or was that embarrassment? She took a deep breath and let herself think back, wincing as Maia watched her face intently. “A while.”

Maia snorted. “Who do you think you are? Edward Cullen?A while,” she mimicked in a sulky impression of Rose.

“Well I don’t remember the exact time frame,” Rose huffed, and Maia patted her hand.

“If you have to think about it that hard, it’s probably been too long.”

“I’m perfectly content without sex,” she complained and Maia raised an eyebrow, taking in Rose’s bouncing leg and tight arms across her chest.

“Sure, that’s why you look like you’re jonesing for a fix right now. I bet Blake gives good orgasms.” Maia’s grin spelled trouble, and Rose narrowed her eyes as she faked a gag.

“Those are two words that don’t belong in the same sentence together.”

“Good orgasms?” Maia quirked, and Rose threw a pillow at her just as her phone rang again. Honestly, it was impressive her mother had waited this long to call back… or maybe it was worrying. What had she been doing in between phone calls?

With a wince, she hit the green button. “Hello, Mother.”

Maia gave a quiet laugh and mouthed, “good luck,” as she set up the TV for the rest of their Kardashians marathon.

“Darling! I’msoglad you and David are spending time together! You always did have such fun. I’m glad you can see now what an excellent idea the fundraiser was for you two.”

“You know we can barely stand one another, and I haveyouto thank for having to work with him. I never would have decided to do this otherwise,” Rose said slowly as a bad feeling started to swirl inside her.

“Nonsense, dear! You would be absolutely perfect together!” Her mother’s voice rose shrilly in the way that only happened when she was thinking about marriage, babies, or boys.

“You mean as temporary business partners, right?”

“Well, Grace and I had hoped–”

“Mother! Are you telling me that you and Blake’s mom tried to set us up? Are youcrazy?”

Maia turned to her with wide eyes, overhearing Rose’s exclamation.

“Crazy? For wanting my daughter to be happy? Taken care of? David is a lovely young man and from the news, I can see that you agree.”

“There is nothing going on between me and David Blake!”Rose shrieked, frustration clawing at her insides. Damn rat bastard of a man stirring up trouble. She took two deep breaths. “Listen, I’ve got to go. Next time you’re presented with the opportunity to meddle in my love life, pleasedon’t.” She hung up to the sound of her mother’s high-pitched protests once again and growled. Maia winced at whatever expression was currently on her face.

“That bad?” Maia asked sympathetically.

“She got together with Blake’s mom to try and set us up because, and I quote, ‘I need taking care of’.” Her hands balled into fists and she took another short breath before releasing it and walking over to the kitchen.

“I’m sure she’s just trying to look out for you, Ro,” Maia said, sympathy widening her eyes.

“He’s an ass! Anegotisticalass! And a man-whore! He sleeps with everything that moves, and yet she wants me to date him?” Rose was breathing hard by the time she finished her rant. “I’m sorry, Maia, I justhatewhen my mother interferes like this.” She went back to hunting down the ingredients for margaritas. “Let’s just have cocktails, watch TV, have a girls’ day, you know? Strictly no boy talk.”
