“Clothes, toiletries, whatever you need. Cara is going to stay with Katie for a while so we don’t compromise security with her coming and going while we’re locked in. She can get you what you want and bring it back home for you. Other than that, we’re not supposed to have any visitors.” Rose wasn’t sure when those decisions had been made and irritation reared its head again as Blake attempted to control her life.

“You don’t need to do that. We’re not friends.”

Blake snorted. “No, right, sorry. We’re just two people who occasionally fuck, is that it? God, Rose. Give me a break here. I’m trying to keep you safe.”

“I never asked you to.”

“Oh sorry, I guess I got mixed signals when you turned up at my house in the middle of the night and passed out in my driveway.”

“I was inshock. I wasn’t thinking clearly,” she shot back, jaw clenching and unclenching as they glared at each other. “I’m not your girlfriend. I’m notyours, period. So I’d appreciate it if you wouldstoptrying to control me.”

“I’m not trying to control you!” Blake hissed out a breath and she was surprised at the soft hurt on his face when he looked down at her. “Give me the list or don’t, stay with me or don’t – but know that if you choose the latter, you’ll be putting everyone, including yourself, in danger needlessly. You fucked up not telling people about the notes–”

“–I didn’t realize–”

“Well, now you do. You know the stakes. This guy is dangerous. So just suck up your pride for once and do the right thing.”

The elevator doors slid open and she was grateful because Rose wasn’t sure what she would have said in response. Was she being ungrateful? Selfish? Were her negative feelings for Blake clouding her judgment?

Noah cleared his throat from behind them and she jumped, having forgotten he was there. “Stay safe, Ms DuLoe.”

Rose nodded and they stepped out of the elevator and towards the exit as Noah headed back up. A camera flashed somewhere and bile burned in her stomach at the thought of the world seeing her like this – shaken and rumpled.

Blake spun to her as soon as they reached his car, a hand lifting as if to touch her face before he dropped it back to his side. “So what will it be, Rose?”

It was the most times he’d ever said her name and she should have felt relieved or vindicated that he’d dropped theprincessmoniker, but instead it made her feel… guilty.

“I’ll get you a list,” she said quietly and he nodded like the answer didn’t matter either way to him.

“Then let’s get you home.”

Homewasn’t a word she’d ever imagined associating with David Blake, but she supposed there was a first time for everything.
