“And your dad?”

“He’s okay.” She smiled, but it faded quickly when she noticed the bandage around his arm. “I’m sorry–”

“You don’t need to apologize.” Blake smiled slightly at the slight look of irritation she couldn’t hold back. “You didn’t do this, that bastard did. I knew the risks. So did Stevie.”

“Is he going to be okay? Jones said the car was aiming for the driver's side.”

“I know.” A muscle in Blake’s jaw popped before he relaxed it again. “They thinkhethought that I would be driving.”

“Bastard,” she whispered as the anger she’d been suppressing started to kindle again and Blake nodded, stepping even closer as one hand came up to cup her cheek as he peered anxiously into her face before letting her go again. “When are they clearing you?”

“I can go whenever you’re ready,” he said and she nodded, content to just enjoy his warmth for a quiet moment before clearing her throat and stepping back. Now that she knew everyone was okay, she just felt tired. The nurse called her name and they walked back over to her desk as she confirmed Rose’s scans were all normal. They were free to go.

“Jones is escorting us out of here personally,” Blake said, somehow knowing again what she’d been thinking about. “I don’t think he’s going to try again.”

The truth was, she didn’t either. Otherwise, why would he have apologized? “He sent me flowers and an apology note.”

Blake frowned, his hand tightening around hers as he tugged her to a stop so they could collect their meager belongings and sign their insurance paperwork, before they moved towards the exit. “We’re going to find him and we’re going to stop him. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.”

Rose gave him a thin smile as she pushed through the doors to the parking lot outside. “It’s not me I’m worried about.”
