My eyes alight with desire when I see how close she’s drifting to me, how her warmth echoes from her fingers and invades my core.
“I’m not talking about sex,” she whispers. “I’m talking about love.” She swallows hard as a tear trickles down her cheek. “And more importantly, power.”
Hesitation grips me then. I’m struggling to reconcile everything she’s made me feel with everything that’s surfacing now. I do care about Alex. I care about her more than I can dare to admit. Is it love? I’m not even sure I’m familiar with the sensation, but I know it’s easier to breathe when I’m by her side.
“I have to think about it,” I admit. “But I promise I’ll take care of Amos. That will be one thing you can truly count on me for.”
She blinks rapidly and then sits back, fingers tracing my chin lightly. “All right. I respect that.”
“Alex?”
“Yes, Soren?”
Her eyes glow affectionately when she focuses on me, displaying the emotions I don’t think I can bear to allow slip from my mouth. She waits patiently while I gather my strength.
Fuck. What am I supposed to say now?
“Soren?”
I shake my head, adjust my position in the driver’s seat, and pop the car into drive. “Nothing. Don’t worry about it.”
