“Alex,” I whisper. “You sure you want to spy on Amos?”

She shrugs. “I want to know what he’s doing with my property.”

I nod. “That’s fair.”

“I have a feeling he’s been up to something lately. Lots of cars passing through. Julie says there have been multiple visitors.”

“That’s not unusual for a criminal empire.”

She squints at her tea, takes a sip, and then sets it down. “Right—but this is different. This is Amos. He doesn’t have much control over those accounts. It should all be in my name. So, something is up.”

“I see what you’re saying.”

We sit quietly for a few minutes while sipping our tea. When night falls, she stands and states she’s ready to move across the grounds toward the mansion. Silence follows us out of a side exit in the pool house and then lingers as we make our way over the lush lawn toward the main building.

Lights blaze from the windows. Amos has clearly been enjoying having the place to himself. Without Alex around to keep him in check, he’s probably doing rather dirty business with her estate—I mean, dirtier than usual for a criminal enterprise such as this.

“That window,” I whisper while resting my hand on her hip to guide her to where I want her to go. “The curtains are open enough for us to see inside.”

She hums in agreement and darts forward, keeping her head low as I trot after her. When we reach the window, we peer over the edge and stare inside, noticing three figures wandering around the living area. It’s one of the lesser-used dens in the Moretti mansion, but one as rich and luxurious as any I’ve witnessed.

She gasps. “Those are the Sanderson brothers!”

“The…what?”

“Those two men,” she explains while pointing at the glass, “were the ones holding Coach Neill hostage for the Persian. One of them tried assaulting me at my uncle’s party.”

“Wait, when did you almost get assaulted?” I take her shoulder gently and insist, “Alex, what are you talking about?”

She pushes my chest. “Not now, Tommy. Let’s get back.” She grabs my hand and yanks me across the lawn. “This changes everything.”
