“Shock Collar. Now, if you’ll let me talk... I was inking him when he got a call. Rumor through the grapevine is that Rex has been secretly meeting with some rich prick. Only him and his most trusted men know about this deal that’s going on.”

Nix’s brows shoot up. “Secret meetings? For what—to sell drugs? Why do I care about that?”

“More than that, brother.”

“What do you mean?” His hands grip the arms of his chair in anticipation.

“Allegedly—” I pause and laugh. “Like my use of legal jargon?”

“Reilly,” Nix growls, urging me to get on with it.

“Allegedly, there’s talk of a war brewing between the Snakes and the Draaks, and this mystery man is bringing in weapons and reinforcements for the Draaks.”

“A fucking war? Shit. That won’t be good.” His face pales as I watch him play out all the scenarios in his mind.

“The Draaks want to take the West Side for themselves, completely wipe out the Snakes.”

Nix slams his fists into his desk as he roars out a string of curses. “What else did you hear? Tell me everything.”

“That’s it, man. But it sounded serious so I thought I’d let you know.”

I can see the ‘thank you’ in his eyes, but god knows he’ll never say it out loud. “If you’re done, get the fuck out of here, Reilly. I have shit to do.” He’s still too stubborn to let go of the Tara situation, or at least talk to me about it.

I hop off his desk, slapping his back as I go. “I’ll let your shitty attitude slide since you’re stressed… but be safe, man. I’d hate if anything happened to you.”

“Nothing’s gonna happen to me.”

That’s what everyone always thinks.

“You’re not invincible. And you don’t even have Rush keeping an eye out for you anymore.” I can hear the worry in my own voice.

“He’s better off with Tara.” I can see the fear in his blue eyes. He’s worried about something. He still has some security around, but no one as good as Rush.

“What’s going on?”

Nix huffs, running his hands through his hair. “I have to tell you something…”

My mind goes to the worst—Tara’s in danger. “Spit it out, Nix.”

“Last week, the Draaks showed up at the house. They didn’t get in the gate, but they had a very specific message.” His nostrils flare and his eyebrows pinch together. “They threatened to come after Tara.”

My stomach drops, the tacos I had for lunch threatening to come up at the thought of Tara being hurt. Fuck, fuck, fuck. Not only do I have it bad for this girl, but the idea of her getting hurt guts me.

“What do you mean?” I growl, fear buzzing through my body.

“You know they’ve had it out for me for a while now, but it’s escalated. Rex threatened to take her and let his men fucking rape her. And worse.”

Shock radiates through my limbs, and my mouth opens and closes like a fish, unable to form any fucking words. It shouldn’t surprise me that they’d do that. The Draaks have always been ruthless. I should know—they took my parents from me.

I can’t let them hurt her. They’ve fucked me over enough; I won’t let them have the woman I love. I’ll do whatever I have to.

I’m not sure when these feelings got so strong, but I fucking love her. I love her more than I thought I could, and if she’s taken from me, I’ll kill any motherfucker who stands in my way.

The Draaks are pure evil, and they have no problem following through on their threats, so I’m confused as to why Nix would keep this from me.

“Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”

His jaw clenches. “I didn’t want to worry you.” I know he’s trying to protect me by not telling me that the same gang that killed my parents is after Tara, but I’d rather know so I’m not blindsided. That would only leave me weak and vulnerable.
