“Deal.”

She smiles, wrapping her pinky around mine.

“I can’t believe this. Marnix Taylor,” Lya sighs, shaking her head.

“What about him?” A deep, raspy voice drifts from the doorway. My head snaps toward the sound, finding Lya’s blond, tattooed boyfriend Zep swaggering in. His blue eyes are locked on my best friend, flaring with jealousy.

“You can tone down that green-eyed monster, Zep. This is about me, not Lya.”

His demeanor changes instantly, replaced with curiosity. “Why are you talking about Nix Taylor?”

“I-I...” I stutter, picking at a rip in my old leggings.

Lya cuts in. “She was asking if I knew much about him. He came into the restaurant today, ordering around the waitresses like he owned the place.”

My gaze meets hers, silently thanking her for not telling him right now. I don’t know if I could handle his disappointment. I know she’ll tell the guys later—they don’t keep anything from each other—but I’m glad she didn’t do it while I’m here.

“Uh-huh,” Zep murmurs skeptically.

“What do you know about him?” Lya asks.

Zep might actually be the perfect person to ask, if Marnix really is the Snakes’ lawyer. Zep’s been doing random jobs for the Snakes for a couple years now to cover a debt to them, since he enlisted their help in saving Lya’s twin sister Lainey. Lya hates it, and has been worried sick about him since he started repaying that debt. Though even if he wasn’t working for them, Zep’s uncle Viper is a member of the Snakes, so there’s a chance he’d know about their lawyer through him.

“Dude’s an asshole,” Zep scoffs.

“Says another asshole,” I tease. But he only huffs at my remark. “Tell us something we don’t know.”

“He’s an asshole, but he’s loyal and damn good at his job. He was working with the Snakes a little before his dad died, but now he’s completely taken over, busting his ass to get these guys who really don’t deserve it out of trouble.”

“Do you know anything about his relationship with his father?” I ask, the suspicion in Zep’s eyes immediately making me regret it.

“That’s a pretty personal question about someone who only ate at your restaurant.” His eyes narrow at me. I don’t know what to say; he’s got me there.

Why does he have to be so damn perceptive?

Lya stands, clapping her hands. “Well, that’s enough chit chat. Come on lazy bums, let’s get to work!” She moves over to the mats. “Let’s go, you two! Chop chop!”

Zep’s skeptical gaze lingers on me, but he eventually drops it, making his way over to Lya.

I let out the breath I didn’t realize I was holding. Well, that could’ve gone worse.
