I don’t know anything about weddings and I’ve never planned on having a big, flashy one. My parents would want a traditional Indian wedding, but I’ve never really followed their customs or traditions religiously. I’ve always imagined having an Indian-American fusion wedding though, to appease my parents and to bring both of my cultures together. Maybe his mom will be really into wedding planning and will want to do all this.

Oh fuck. His mother.Shit, I completely forgot about the fact that I’ll have to meet people and pretend I’m actually in love with the asshole. I’ve got to brush up on my acting skills, because he’s not the most pleasant man to be around. Anyone will be able to see right through our facade if I don’t start acting like I remotely like the guy.

Going back to my room, I grab my phone off the charger before walking back to the kitchen area where I left Rushton. He’s eyeing me suspiciously, like he knows what I’m about to do and thinks it’s a bad idea. I scroll through my phone until I find Marnix’s number and immediately hit call.

“What do you want now?” His cold tone pierces my ear, clearly displeased that I’m bugging him again.

“You couldn’t be bothered to give me the ring yourself?” Not that I expected a grand proposal, but he could’ve at least had the decency to give this to me himself.

“It’s not like you’re really my wife. I figured you wouldn’t care.” Of course this isn’t real, but he doesn't get to send his lackey to do his dirty work for him, no matter how meaningless it is to him.

“I’m not going to follow these demands. My dress will be what I want, and I like lemon cake. The only part I agree to is your mother helping, because I don’t have any idea how to plan a wedding.”

“You will do as you’re told. We’ve already discussed this.” His voice is detached.

If he doesn't care, then why is he pushing me so hard, fighting me at every turn? He can't be an emotionless pig while also dictating every part of a wedding that’s also supposed to be mine.

“Hard pass. Thanks, though.” I hope he hears the smug tone in my voice and knows that he’ll never have the ability to control what I do.

“You will. You have an appointment tomorrow to go dress shopping. Find something for our engagement party next weekend while you’re at it. Something respectable.”

I’ll show you respectable when my fist meets your face, dickhead.

Marnix continues. “Rush will drive you where you need to go.”

“Not happening. I’ll drive myself.” I don’t want to have a shadow who works for him constantly following me around, no matter how hot that shadow is. I understand I might need protection, but I also need space and freedom.

“No, you will not. He is there to protect you and drive you around.”

“Might want to think of getting someone new. I’ve already kicked this one’s ass while I was half naked.” Rushton growls beside me. I assume he’s pissed that I’ve just spilled his secret. It’s not like Marnix won’t notice the gash in his forehead or the bruise on his face.

“What the fuck?”Marnix raises his voice angrily. Not sure if that’s to do with the fact that I beat up his bodyguard or that he saw me half naked.

“It’s your fault for sending some random dude to break into my apartment.”

“Tara...”The tone of his voice warns me to stop while I’m ahead.

“Don’t you have an important meeting or something that was so pressing you couldn’t come put a ring on my finger?”

“You better get used to it. I live a busy life.”

“Hmm, we’ll see,” I taunt. I know I’ll never come before his work, but I can still make his life as difficult as he’ll make mine.

“Is there anything else or are you done bothering me now?”

“Nothing, other than you’re a Grade A asshole.” I hang up on him, before he has the chance to reply. That conversation didn’t really make me feel any better. He’s expecting me to do this list of things in a short amount of time. All things I have no interest in doing. Things that are going to mean a big change for me, as I try to fit into his world.

Turning my attention to Rushton, I see he’s now glaring at me. I assume he’s pissed that I ratted him out to his boss, and I shrug. “What? I did kick your ass.”

He huffs. “You didn’t kick my ass. You just surprised me.”

“Shouldn’t you be prepared for situations like that?” Instead of answering me, he looks at me in thought. Probably wondering how pissed Marnix is going to be at him when he gets back. “So what do I have to do to get you to leave me alone?”

“I can’t. I’m your bodyguard now.” His dark eyes narrow on me.

“I’ll still try to evade you.” I’d rather be honest with the man. No point in lying when he probably already knows what I’ll do.

“You can try—it won’t work.” It’s his turn to shrug at me, like it’s silly for me to even contemplate getting out of his sights.
