“Yeah, something like that.” I grin at her mischievously, and she nods her head.

“I’ll be right back.” She hesitates for a second, but eventually she goes to see what she can find. If she doesn’t have anything good, I might just have to marry Marnix in a dress I already have, or maybe I could borrow one from Lya or Lainey.

“Tara, are you alright?” Lya asks, looking at me cautiously.

“Yeah, I’m fine. Today has just been a lot.” It’s the truth; the amount of dresses I’ve tried on is pure insanity. They’re all starting to look the same, and at this point, I can’t even remember which ones I liked or hated.

“If this is about the money, you can still back out. You don’t have to marry him.” Lya gives me a stern look, still not fully understanding why I’m doing this.

“I want to marry him.” I hold back the cringe that’s trying to escape with that lie.I mean, it’s not a complete lie. I’d rather marry Marnix than Zayan.

“Tara, what’s going on? You know that’s not true. You don’t do marriage or relationships, and you know we can help you with the money for the restaurant,” she protests.

“She’s right. Greyson and I can help too. We’re here for you. We just want to make sure you’re making the right choice.” Lainey goes with the softer route, compared to Lya. I know they care about me, but this is what I have to do.

“Listen.” I point to Lya, as I try to make them understand. “You have three boyfriends.” I point to Lainey. “And you have a husband who slept with your sister, kidnapped her, and stalked you. None of that is normal—we aren’t normal. I know this doesn’t make sense to you guys, but it does to me. I just want you to be there for me. If I get burned along the way, then so be it, but at least it was my choice to make.”

“Alright, bridezilla, retract the claws. We’re just looking out for you,” Lya says with a chuckle. We all have fucked up relationships and lives. I can’t say I don’t find it fun at times, but I also wonder how we all got ourselves into these messes.

I hiss at her, pretending to be an angry cat, making both her and Lainey laugh. No matter what, even if this wedding is a complete clusterfuck, at least I’ll still have them by my side. I’m sure Lya would even kick Marnix’s ass on my behalf if she thinks he’s disrespecting me, so it’s not all bad.

The woman finally comes back, carrying a dress that makes my breath hitch. This is the one, I can feel it. It’s everything I imagine wearing when I’m walking down the aisle. Too bad it’s going to get wasted on a sham of a wedding. I knew they’d have something for me; I just didn’t realize Marnix was fucking dress-blocking me.

I can’t wait to show him just how obedient of a wife I am when I walk down the aisle wearing a dress he’s going to hate.

Game on, husband.
