“Want to drink about it?” Now I have her attention. That isn’t good though. She shouldn’t have to drink her emotions away.

Just like you shouldn’t either.

“Got any beer?”

“Yeah, let me grab one for you.”

“I can do it.” She waves me off, walking over to my fridge.

I shrug. “Alright, bottom shelf.”

She takes one out for me and for herself. She makes sure the cap is still on her beer before flipping it upside down, checking carefully to make sure no liquid comes out. It’s strange to say the least, but she doesn’t seem to care that I’m watching her.

“Sure you don’t want to talk about it?” My voice is hesitant, as she opens the beers and brings them over for us, sitting on the couch next to me.

She takes a long gulp before she says, “I hate the people Marnix works with.”

“Randall?” My eyes are glued to my hand wrapped around the longneck bottle.

“Him and some guy named Charles.”

“What happened?” Based on the way she’s acting, it’s going to be bad. I can feel my blood already boiling. I know just how bad Randall can get, and she doesn’t deserve that at all.

“One told me my English was really good for a mail order bride, and the other told me I was a low class whore who needed a muzzle.” Her expression darkens as she recounts what they said to her.

“What the fuck?” Rage pounds in my skull as my fist clenches by my side.

“Exactly my reaction.”

“Please tell me you knocked them out.” I hope to god she put them in their place. I hope she wrecked their faces until they couldn’t see out of their eyes anymore.

She scoffs. “What do you think? That would’ve ruined Marnix’s image.”

“He did something though, right?”

Please let my best friend not be the ass he pretends to be, for once. Please tell me he did something for her.

“No.”

My fist tightens around the glass, threatening to crush it in my hand. “No? He just let them say that to you and get away with it?” I’m going to fuck him up. I’m going to kill him and then bring him back so I can lecture his ass, then maybe kill him again.

“Why do you think I’m so pissed?”

“Fuck! What the hell? I’m going to go beat his ass. Then I’m going to find Charles and Randall and beat their asses too.” I can’t believe he’d let that happen. That’s not the Nix I know. Yeah, he might be an asshole, but he’d never let anyone say something like that to her. Or so I thought.

“It’s done. Nothing you can do tonight.”

“Don’t sound so fucking defeated. It’s not okay. That shit will never be okay, and when I see each of them next, they’ll know just how bad they fucked up.” My voice gets louder with each word, and I stand up from the couch, pacing back and forth in the living room.

“Cohutta.” She reaches out for me, but I can’t handle her touch right now. I’m afraid of what I’ll do if I let her touch me. She doesn’t deserve any of that; she’s too good for it.

“No. It’s disgusting.”

“Will you just sit down and drink with me?”

“How are you so calm right now?” She’s acting like it’s not a big deal, but it is.

“It’s nothing worse than I’ve heard before. It’s just a slap in the face that Marnix didn’t defend me.”
