They can keep fighting amongst themselves all they want, maybe they’ll forget I found out their secret and that they brought me down here to kill me.

Theon walks up to Ace, whispering in his ear while staring me in the eye. He’s obviously saying something about me, but there’s no way I can hear. Ace shakes his head and mutters, “Idiot,” before turning his attention back to me, his face still red with anger.

Shit. So much for hoping they’d forget I was here.

“Temptress… what are we going to do with you?” Ace clicks his tongue, stopping in front of me. Blais steps beside him with a red-handled knife, twirling it between his fingers. Theon stays back, observing like usual.

“Let me go?” I squeak, even though I know that’s far from what’s going to happen.

Ace’s lips pull up in a smile, showing off his perfect white teeth, as a dark chuckle fills the quiet room. “Now, that’s funny, temptress. But you’re never getting out of here and you know it.” He’s so close, I could kick him since my ankles aren’t chained, but where would that get me?

Fucking nowhere.

My bare foot to his balls wouldn’t do anything, but piss him off more.

On second thought, I’m not leaving this room ever again. Might as well cause this asshole some pain.

“But before all that, I thought we’d tell you our story since you’re so interested. Have you ever heard that curiosity killed the cat? Just remember you put yourself in this position, temptress.” Ace’s voice pulls me from my sadistic thoughts.

My heart races at the thought of knowing how they started killing people and taking their money, but it quickly stops when I remember he’s only telling me because he’s going to kill me too.

I’m just another one of their victims.

I’m dying here today, so I might as well listen to what they have to say. Curiosity really will cause my death.

“When Allie died, we were devastated,” Ace starts, but my eyes fall to Theon, who does everything he can to avoid my gaze. I know his secret. I could reveal it right now to take Ace’s attention away from me, but I won’t. Deep inside, I care about Theon and I won’t hurt him like that.

“We all had hard lives, but we had each other and that’s all that mattered. We’ve always had this darkness inside us, but she kept that tamed. She was truly the light in our world. Without her, we all snapped. But we took that dark energy and turned it into something good. We vowed to find her killer, and not give up until we did.”

My heart hurts at the pain in Ace’s voice. He’s always so in control and demanding, so the quiver in his voice almost breaks me.

His eyes are sincere. He honestly believes killing people is a good thing.

“Our first kill was reckless. We researched every person that was at Trinity the night she was killed. We found out this guy had raped a sex worker a few months earlier, but was never charged, never arrested even when all evidence pointed at him. He used his money and connections to skate on by with no consequences. We figured that maybe he saw Allie standing in the alley behind the club and thought she was a sex worker or something. Someone he could easily take advantage of and get away with it again.”

Ace stops, his eyes a million miles away, like he’s deep in thought. Like he’s reliving the night he lost his sister.

“What happened?” My soft voice pulls his tormented green eyes to mine.

“We didn’t have this place yet, so we took him out to the middle of the woods. Theon held him while Blais and I tortured him. After we got some of our aggression out on his smug face, he provided us with his bank statements showing that he’d left the club and was an hour away at the time she died. He didn’t kill her. He didn’t kill Allie, but we still killed him.”

“And it felt amazing,” Blais chimes in. My pulse races as a chill runs down my spine. He wasn’t the one they were looking for, but they still killed him—and enjoyed it. I try to stop my thoughts from turning to how good it felt to sink the knife in Tommy, but I can’t. I understand exactly what Blais means, and I wish I didn’t.

Ace’s eyes light up in agreement. “Yeah, we took a slimeball that got away with raping a young woman who was just trying to work to provide for her family, out of this world, and it was the best I’d felt since Allie died.”

I can already tell where this story is going. The first wasn’t their last.

“So you started killing people that you knew weren’t her killer?” I ask.

“Yeah, a little side hobby to make us feel better while we searched. Without her, it felt like the only way we could have a purpose in the world.”

There are plenty of other ways to feel like you have a purpose, but the sick part of me understands. They could serve justice that wasn’t being done by the law. Something they felt was the right thing to do.

“How do you pick who to kill?” My curiosity is getting the best of me.

“All three of us have been fucked over by rich pricks that just use their money to get away with anything they want. Even murder,” Ace says, glancing back at Theon. He must be talking about Theon’s mom’s husband who killed her and left Theon for dead, leaving him with his scars. Theon told me about what happened, but he never told me they killed the man responsible.

“Which is why, after that first kill, we built this place and found trustworthy people to help us get rid of the bodies. We started with the ones that hurt us. The man who killed Theon’s mom and left him for dead. Blais’ mom’s boyfriend who continuously beat him. My father. And Allie and my first foster parents, who got away with all kinds of abuse.”
