My heart is hammering in my chest so hard I wonder if they can hear it. I’m just being paranoid. They throw me off balance with their looks so I’m just feeling extra skeptical.

“Uh… actually, I’m still pretty new here. I was hoping you could tell me about all the highlights of the city.” The lies come easier the more I say them. I’ve actually been in Cincinnati almost three years. Matt and I were lucky enough to both get jobs here straight out of Quantico.

“You’ve gotta go to Roebling Suspension Bridge at night. Fucking stunning,” Blais says. In all of my years here, that’s something I haven’t actually done. As fun as it is talking about the city, I need more juicy intel than a bridge.

“I’ll have to check that out. Actually, I was wondering if you guys know anything about Ross Novak. My mom got into an accident yesterday and she needs a lawyer.”

As soon as Novak’s name leaves my lips, the air turns cold.

“Aw, that sucks. What happened?” This from Blais.

My mind spins, spitting out the first thing I can think of. “Some jackass ran a red light, T-boning her in the middle of a busy intersection. There were tons of witnesses that say her light was green, but he’s claiming that his was green.”

Well, that turned into me babbling about things they don’t care about.

Ace’s large body stills beside mine. “Novak is a prick. There are plenty of lawyers in Cincinnati. Why him?” he says, clenching his teeth as if he’s trying not to lose his cool.

“I’ve just heard he’s the best there is. My mom’s injuries are severe and we were given his name at the hospital. I’ve heard he doesn’t take on a lot of new clients unless you are referred.” Maybe they’ll believe I was here to get him to take my case if I threw myself at him. The lies are bitter on my tongue. My heart clenches at the thought of using my dead mom as a lie to get information.

“Trust me, find a different lawyer.” Ace slides out of the booth, not even acknowledging my words. “Blais, make sure Theon doesn’t chase her away. I need to go check on Kenna to see if sheneeds help,” he growls, then storms off.

Blais watches him with a concerned look, but quickly turns his attention back to me.

“What did he mean when he said Novak is a prick?” I ask Blais, taking a sip of my liquid courage.

“Novak was that guy you were trying to dry hump on the dance floor the other night,” he spits out, then continues, “He’s some skeezy lawyer that likes to steal money from clients and pick up women from clubs on the weekend that aren’t his wife.”

“What? You’re serious? That’s terrible! Do his clients know? I wonder if his wife knows he’s with other women.” I try to keep my voice from sounding too fake. I don’t give a shit what he does with other women that aren’t his wife. I care about whether or not he’s the one I need to be arresting.

“Why? So you can know if you’re going to have to look over your shoulder for his crazy wife threatening you with a knife?” Theon finally adds to the conversation, and of course, he’s being an asshole again.

Blais snickers, but I turn my gaze to Theon, not backing down just because he looks like he could kill me with one punch to the head. I’m about tired of his foul fucking mood. “If you have something to say, big man, just say it. I’ll sit here all night waiting for you to spit it out, but I won’t let you be an asshole to me for no reason. So tell me why you’re being a dick,” I growl, the sweet act I came in here with cracking.

He looks like he wants to murder me for calling him out. He opens his mouth to speak, but Ace cuts him off, “Don’t.” His warm body fills the space beside me, sitting closer than he was before. I notice that the angry demeanor he had before he got up is gone.

“Wanna go dance?” His soft lips lightly brush against my earlobe as he speaks. His strong hand rests on my thigh, moving to where his fingertips disappear under the hem of my red dress. My eyes follow the movement, noticing the redness and little cuts across his knuckles. His finger inches closer to the edge of my panties and my brain almost completely short circuits.

I need some help if just a little bit of attention from strangers does this to my body. I’ve been so focused on training for this mission the past couple weeks that I haven’t gotten laid, which I so desperately need.

My breath quickens, goosebumps lining my thigh where he’s touched me. Attempting to stop being a sex-crazed woman and get back to my job, I push his hand off my thigh.

“We weren’t done talking about Novak,” I say, regaining my composure.

Ace’s face is still inches from mine when I feel a pinch in my neck. Warmth instantly fills my body. What the fuck?“Oh, we’re done talking about him for now.” His voice sounds like he’s in my head.

Dizziness takes control of me. My body sways back and forth until a strong hand grabs my arm, stilling me.Did he just fucking drug me?

Anxiety about what they’re going to do to me floods my brain. I can’t go down without a fight—that’s not who I am. With all the strength I can muster, I try to lift my arm and elbow Ace, but I can’t even move. My muscles have lost all movement.

The edges of my vision darken as Ace drags my limp body from the booth and someone grabs my other arm. My legs aren’t even holding me up, they are. They’re going to fucking regret this when I wake up.

“Shh… Sleep, darling,” Blais whispers.

“Fuck. You.” I try to growl at him, but I’m not even sure if any sound came out.

My head falls back and I catch Blais’ dark and tortuous stare before I lose myself completely.

I’m not sure who says it, but I hear a threatening voice in my head before falling into the dark abyss. “You can’t pull one over on us… Agent Stone.”
