“I wasn’t,” she says calmly, in the softest tone I’ve ever heard come out her mouth. Maybe she’s trying a different tactic. Maybe she thinks if she’s calm, I won’t want to lunge at her and choke her out. Not sure that method’s going to work for her though, because that answer isn’t the truth.

“Last warning. Answer the fucking questions truthfully.” My demanding tone bounces off the concrete walls.

“I wasn’t scoping out the club.” The truth in her voice makes me question whether she’s being honest, but at a minimum, she’s being evasive. My fists clench and my breathing gets heavy.Relax. Calm down. She’s doing this on purpose.I try to control my breathing, but I’m not sure how long I’ll last.

“Zamira, stop fucking around and answer it honestly,” Theon says, walking over to my side and bumping his shoulder with mine, trying to remind me to keep it together.

“I’m not lying. No matter what I say, you won’t believe me so I don’t get why you’re even asking me questions.” She scoffs. “I wasn’t scoping out the club, I was there for Novak.” A knot forms in my stomach at the mention of that bastard’s name. That slimy fucker doesn’t know what he has coming to him, but I don’t like the idea of her being there for him.

“Why?” Now it’s Blais jumping in and his tone seems a bit defensive. When he saw her dancing with him, it took everything in him not to pummel the asshole’s face in. We already hate Novak, but adding in the way Blais is infatuated with her makes it even worse. He barely even knew this woman and was ready to blow everything we worked for, just because Novak’s scuzzy hands were on her.

“He has information that I need,” she says directly, but the vague answers are getting on my nerves.

“What information?” I ask impatiently.

“The FBI has been watching him for some time. There’s been an increase in crimes being committed with untraceable guns all over the city and we know there’s illegal arms trafficking going on, which needs to stop. Some sources have traced it back to him, so it’s my job to figure out where he’s getting them and who he’s working with.” She looks me directly in the eyes when she answers, but her top lip slightly twitches. She’s good at never showing her tells, but I’ve watched her face enough to already pick up that when her lip twitches, she’s hiding shit.

She’s fucking lying again.

I go to lunge for her, but Theon holds my shoulder back giving me a hard glare, shaking his head. He looks just as pissed off as me, but he knows she’ll stop talking again if we try to kill her one last time. Maybe I should. Finally get this shit over with so I can stop thinking about this beautiful disaster sitting in front of me.

Fuck. Get out of your head.

If that’s all she thinks Novak has done, the FBI really has it wrong. I’ve never heard of that fucker dealing guns. What he does is much worse. We’ve been holding out on getting rid of him ourselves because we don’t have all the information we need, but she really has no idea what kind of monster he is if that’s what she thinks he’s doing.

Part of her story already isn’t adding up. “He wasn’t there the night we took you.” If she really was there for Novak, she wouldn't have been there or she would have left when she realized he wasn’t there.

“He’d been there the weekend before, so I figured he’d be back. When I didn’t see him, I decided I’d talk to you guys, hoping you could give me information on him.” Her lip ever so slightly twitches again.Another lie.

“So you thought we’d tell you everything you needed to know about him?” Theon asks angrily.

“It was worth a shot. I was there and I needed information, but I’m still unsure whether or not you guys are working with that scumbag.” She looks between all of us skeptically.

“I’d never work with that stupid motherfucking piece of shit,” Blais roars. I glare at him, trying to tell him to tone it the fuck down before he tips her off, but it looks like it’s too late.

“Hmm, I think that answers that question then. Why do you guys hate him so much?” she asks calmly, trying to hold down a small smile.

“We’re asking the questions, not you,” I say abruptly. “Is that all the FBI is looking into? Him running guns illegally?”

“That’s all my mission is for. Take him down and whoever else is helping him. The FBI isn’t sure he’s workingalone.” She emphasizes her last word, looking at us with hesitancy, like she still thinks we’re working with him.

I’d rather chop my own dick off and eat it than ever work with that piece of shit.

“Does the FBI have any other leads on who’s helping him?” I ask.

“No.”

“You think he’s doing more, don’t you?” Theon says. He clearly sees more than I do right now with what she’s saying and her body language.

“Yes.” Her damn lip didn’t twitch that time.

“Care to expand on that?” I ask.

“No. I’m not sure what it is he’s doing. I thought I’d have more time to talk to him, but someone interrupted that chance.” She pointedly looks at Blais who has a smug grin on his face at the thought of taking her away from him. He’s puffing out his chest like he’s macho for stopping her from getting information from Novak.

Blais chuckles. “You do realize you’re supposed to answer the questions, right? Not beat around the bush?”

“That’s all I have to say.”
