I have Matt and Chief, but they have their own lives and families, they would be just fine without me. In the grand scheme of things, I am truly alone. No one will feel like their world has upended itself when I’m gone.

“You can’t break someone that’s already broken.”

Theon’s free hand trails up my back making the hair on my neck stand at attention. I let a single tear fall down my cheek—one for my family. One, that’s all I’ll let him see.

This was supposed to be a test to see if he responds to emotion—which he does, but this just got too real. I’m not supposed to let them see my true feelings, but I just fucked up. Something about this broody man brings out a weird calming presence around me. A stark contrast from how he tries to portray himself.

I meet his hazel gaze, which are much softer than usual. “It wasn’t supposed to be like that,” he says.

Well, that piques my interest.

“Yeah? What was it supposed to be like?”

“It wasn’t supposed to go that far.”

I don’t know if I believe him, because Ace is ruthless. He wants me dead, so why would drowning me be going too far?

“Why’d you let it then?” My voice lacks its usual bite, genuinely curious what his response will be. He furrows his brow, looking like he wants to say something, but instead he masks his face back into his cold, stone exterior.

Instead of pressing more on that, I move on. “You’re the watcher, the observer. You see every little thing.” Theon stills, dropping both hands from my body, then starts putting away the medical supplies.

I miss the warmth of his touch more than I should.

“I know you watch me, so tell me Theon—what do you see?” He stands and places a finger under my chin, pulling my head up to meet his gaze. His soft, thoughtful stare falters my breathing.

“Death.”

My mouth pops open to say something, but it doesn’t come. His answer has me speechless and confused. Theon’s soft eyes harden once again, taking away any tenderness he may have.

Death.

What does he mean? Knowing them, he’s talking about my death at the end of this. The same one that Ace wants on his hands. The same one they’ve been craving since the moment I got here.

He throws my shirt at me and grabs the first-aid kit. “Get up. Let’s go.”

“Where?” He has my undivided attention now.

He pulls me to my feet, causing the shirt to fall on the floor. I stand before him with my breasts bare and nipples hard, but he doesn’t look down at them, he just clenches his jaw.

“Where are you taking me?”

Bending over, I grab my shirt and slide it over my head. With his hand wrapped around my bicep, he pulls me out of the cell toward the torture chamber.

Great, he fixed me up just so he could destroy me again. I should’ve seen that coming.

It’s a good tactic. Scaring me, then fixing me up, giving me comfort, only to pull the rug out from under me the next moment. Mind games are the way to truly get to someone who can handle physical pain. I swear if I’m going back in the chamber, I will fucking raise hell. I’ll take whatever they throw at me with strength, but I won’t make it easy on them.

This could be it. He could be taking what he just said literally and walking me to my death. I can feel it deep in my gut. I pushed Ace too far yesterday and he’s going to kill me today.

We get to the heavy metal door that awaits my pain, but he doesn’t stop. We walk right past it filling me with confusion. “Where are we going?” I ask for what seems like the millionth time, pivoting to look at his face.

Like usual, he says nothing. He walks right to the stairs that took Ace and I up and out to the pool.

The pool.

My stomach clenches at the thought of the water pulling me under again.

I stop in my tracks, pulling as hard as I can against his hold. “No, no, no. You can’t. Theon, no. I’m not going out to the pool again. Kill me right here and now, but don’t take me back out there,” I squeak between pants.
