I don’t want to touch the nasty thing so I just try to cut with one hand. If it comes out uneven, oh well.

“You held her prisoner for nine years.” I let out a growl, and cut him more.

“You took my girl from me.” Cut.

“Threatened to rape her.” Cut.

“Threatened to kill her.” Cut.

Sutton’s blood-curdling screams are like music to my ears. I cut more and more, until I’m all the way through, letting the gross remnants of his cock flop to the ground. Maybe that heart I thought I had earlier is gone, because this satisfies me more than it should.

I toss my knife onto the ground behind me. He’s starting to lose consciousness, likely from the pain and blood loss. Wrapping one hand around his throat, I slap him across the cheek to wake him up, the movement causing my shoulder to ache even more. “Look at me, asshole.”

His eyes flutter open and I look deep into them. “That was for Lainey,” I announce, before tightening my grip until he goes blue and limp under my body. I don’t know how long I stay there with my hand on his lifeless body, just staring at him.

A hand on my shoulder pulls me from my fog. “Come on, man. He’s dead. Let’s go find Lainey. Rian’s just found a secret door behind a bookshelf in his office, but we’ll need his fingerprint to get in.”

There’s no way I’m hauling Sutton’s heavy ass anywhere. Moving his hand closer to Zep’s foot, I look up, giving Zep a silent command. He knows exactly what I’m thinking because his boot comes down forcefully on Sutton’s wrist, breaking it. I take the knife and cut off his whole hand.

Standing, I meet Zep’s gaze and give him a nod. For good measure, I pull out my gun and shoot Sutton right in the forehead. I’ve seen way too many scary movies where the bad guy comes back from the dead, and I won’t risk that crap. I know Lainey wanted to be the one to end this motherfucker’s life, but I just couldn’t stop. The idea of him hurting her blinded me with rage. Every inch of my body was crawling with fury.

“Let’s go,” I say to Zep, walking out of the room.

Where are you, angel?

Coldness consumes my body and goosebumps erupt all down my arms as I lay flat on my back, unsure if I can even move. Everything feels so heavy right now. My whole body is pounding, and my face feels tight, like it’s swollen.

I’m sure if I saw myself in the mirror right now, purple and black bruises would be painted across my face. Trying to lift my hand, it feels like it weighs a hundred pounds. It throbs with pain after being stabbed by Harvey’s blade. It finally touches my face and it feels like a foreign object is touching me. I don’t even recognize the feeling of my own fingers pressing against my skin. My eyes sting from the light seeping through when I open them.Shit. This is bad.

The hits Harvey threw at my face were filled with so much anger and spite. It’s like he’d been saving up all of his anger for the last nine years to unleash it on me.

A loud bang erupts from above me, causing me to flinch. Another one follows. I can hear shuffling, the pounding of running feet, and voices, but everything is muffled from the distance between us.

Alright, Lainey, get up now. Please get up.

I know I need to move my body and prepare myself for what's to come. I can’t be sure who’s going to come into this room next, but I refuse to be a sitting duck just waiting for them.Get up. You have to fight. For Greyson. For Lya. For yourself.

As I attempt to sit up, my entire body screams at me to stay still. I’m not sure what else Harvey did to me with his punches, but whatever it was has left me in pretty bad condition. My ribs and head are screaming at me to stay down. Everything hurts, but I can’t stop now. I’m halfway there; I just need to get on my feet and get to the table with the knives so I can at least try to protect myself.

Crawling to my knees, I take a moment to breathe before I stagger to my feet. I look around, adjusting to my surroundings.Damn it!The chair’s still in here, but Harvey must’ve taken the knives with him in case I woke up. I yank on the chains coming from the ceiling—maybe they could work as a weapon somehow—but they stay rooted in place. Not having a lot of strength prevents me from pulling hard.

Feeling my body getting heavy, I lean against the chair for support. The moment I do, I hear a loud bang against the door, putting me on edge again. The only thing separating me from the monsters lurking on the other side is this wooden door.

Even though my entire body is struggling, I push myself as hard as I can to position myself right next to the door. Maybe if I can ambush whoever walks in, it’ll give me a chance to escape from this room.

Harvey’s coming back to finish what he started. My heart sinks, knowing he’s going to take my body as his, before he takes my life.

This is it. Greyson, please keep your promise to me—be happy. I love you.I’ll go out fighting, but it’s not looking promising at this point. The door handle turns, and I brace myself to attack.

The door swings open in one motion and I pounce, using the element of surprise. I dig my fingernails into flesh and drag them down my captor’s chest, ramming my knee into his dick as hard as I can. My ribs are squeezing tightly, but I push him back and get ready to run or crawl if I can.

Suddenly, a familiar minty scent envelops me.

“Fuck, Lainey. It’s me, angel, it’s me,” Greyson wheezes out as he bends over in pain, cupping his crotch.

His voice sounds like angelic music in my ears. My entire body collapses, causing me to land hard on my knees. He drops down next to me, and wraps me lightly in his arms.

“Baby, we need to get you out of here. You’re hurt really bad. We need to go.” I can hear the pain in his voice as he takes in my injuries. His entire body is tense as he looks at every visible mark on my body.
