“As good as it could go. I feel like a monster, considering I’m the one who helped my father put most of these girls into this position. I couldn’t face them, so I only met with my mom today.” His body is tense, and I can hear the regret coursing through his voice.

“Greyson, you know how I feel about the entire situation. Obviously, it’s messed up, what your father forced you to do and the torment he put you through. I can’t say I agree with your decision to continue his business in order to find me, but at this point, the only thing you can do is try to right those wrongs. If you don’t allow yourself to believe you can be forgiven, or redeemed, then you’ll never be able to move on to do better things. All you can do is help those who have been harmed from this.”

It might not be exactly what he wanted to hear, but it’s the truth. He won’t be able to move on until he allows himself to believe he’s not the darkest monster in the world.

“I know, Lainey. I know. It’s hard to not see yourself as the devil, when that’s exactly who you were groomed to be.” He squeezes my shoulder, refusing to let go.

“We’ll work through it. Once I get better, I’ll go over there with you to get things organized. Eventually, we’ll start trying to take down other operations, and save as many women, men, and children as possible. You’ll be able to provide details and contacts to help us do that.” Leaning up, I plant a soft kiss on his lips to let him know I’m here for him, through the good and bad.

“You’re incredible, angel.” He kisses my temple, and we lay there for a while before I slowly drift back to sleep.

Ishouldn’t have fucked her while she was healing, but her body was basically calling me, tempting me. Her skin was begging for my touch and her pussy was dripping for me. I couldn’t say no.

It’s been almost two weeks and Lainey is finally healed enough to head to my house to see the girls. We’re on our way over and she’s practically chomping at the bit to get there.

Looking over at her beside me, she’s staring out the car window as we make our way to the house. I can’t help but smile just looking at her. I’m so thankful that she’s still with me after everything. I almost lost her.

My heart broke the moment I tore into that torture room and found her. Her beautiful face was black and blue, her eyes were swollen, her hair was gone, and there was blood everywhere. I used to see my father in my nightmares, but now I only see that. I see her all broken because I wasn’t able to protect her.

She says she doesn’t blame me and she doesn't want me to beat myself up over it, but I just can’t help it. I’d assured her that nothing would happen that day. Little did I know, that slimy prick Lee Davis had already signed our death certificates.

Obviously he hadn’t expected me to make it out alive, so he was surprised when I showed up on his doorstep with a bullet that had his name on it. He played his part in Lainey’s suffering; a quick death was better than he deserved, but I didn’t want to waste any more time on a piece of shit like Lee fucking Davis.

It still kills me that I told her everything would be okay that day at the warehouse. Even though it wasn’t intentional, I fucking lied to her and she paid for it with her body.

I had to take her to a hospital with doctors and nurses I don’t know, because Dr. Finley wasn’t answering my calls and I didn’t have time to wait. When we got there, I didn’t even want to leave her to get myself checked out—she’d been gone from me too long already and I was terrified to let her leave my sight. I was worried that if I left her to get the bullet taken out, then she’d be gone when I returned. Leaving her there almost broke me all over again.

I wish I could turn back time and take her pain away. This wouldn’t have happened to her if I would’ve fought harder for her to stay home, or if I hadn’t been so naive—or so arrogant—in thinking we could defeat Sutton easily.

We finally turn into my street, and I feel my palms start to sweat.

“So, this is it.” Her sweet voice pulls me from my internal beating.

“This is it, angel.” I give her a smile, but on the inside, I’m freaking out. I finally have to face the girls who were in the house with Lainey. I need to be a man and face up to my part in their suffering. I’m not sure how many of those girls were specifically in that house because of me, but I deserve whatever anger they have against me.

“Are you sure it’s okay if they stay at your house?” she asks, chewing on her thumbnail.

“I have all this space that I don’t need, so might as well let them use it.”

“You’re amazing, I just want you to know that. You’re not the devil, Greyson. Far from it. You’re my savior.” She reaches over and gives my hand a reassuring squeeze.

“Ah, angel, you think too highly of me… but I’ll take it.” I give her a squeeze back.

The cutest giggle escapes her mouth. “Oh, baby, I’ll spend the rest of our lives trying to prove that to you if I have to,” she says with a sweet grin. Her bruises are starting to turn a yellowish color, but she still looks like the most incredible woman in the world. I can’t help but notice how her hair frames her face perfectly. I know she misses her long hair, but I think the short look is the sexiest thing I’ve ever seen. She’s stunning.

“Good.” I smile at her. It feels nice to be together like this, relaxed and free. “We’re here,” I announce, pulling into my driveway. It feels weird to actually be at my house after staying with Lainey for a couple of weeks.

A beautiful, slightly anxious smile lights up her face. “I haven’t seen them in months. I’m so excited.”

I drive the car into the garage and put it in park. Taking a deep breath in, I try to calm myself. The thought of facing these girls causes my chest to constrict with guilt. “Let’s go, angel. Kora said they’ve been adjusting well since the first night.”

“I’m glad she’s here to help them,” she murmurs, sliding out of the car.

When I make it around to the passenger side, she pulls me in for a kiss. Her soft lips caress mine with so much passion.

“Thank you,” she whispers against my lips. The warmth of her breath sends goosebumps down my arms.

“It’s really the least I could do, angel.” Looking deep into her eyes, I give her one last kiss before we head into the house.
