Her eyes go from in shock to angry in about two seconds. I have to try something before she freaks out on me. I dip my head, bringing my face to hers.

“Greyson, what are you doing?”

I stop in place with my lips right above hers, her breath hitting my skin like a whisper.

“Do you remember our first kiss? We were so inexperienced back then, but it was so fucking good for me.”

“Yeah, I remember, but that doesn’t answer my question. What are youdoing?” She spits the words out with more hostility than I’ve seen so far.

“I thought that maybe feeling my lips would remind you of all the good we had, remind you that I’d never hurt you,” I whisper against her luscious mouth.

Her eyes narrow and before I can stop it, her hand comes up and slaps across my cheek, causing a stinging pain to ripple through my face. The sound echoes through the library with how hard she hit me.

I’ll be her punching bag, if that’s what she needs to work through her feelings.

“You think that you can just come in here and kiss me, and that’ll make up for all the shit I’ve been through?” Her little lip comes up in a snarl. It shouldn’t, but the fight in her makes me hard. Seeing her feisty and holding her ground is such a turn on.

I growl at her rejection. “I thought it’d help.”

“Well, fuck you, Greyson. You betrayed me, you didn’t save me like you promised, and a stupid kiss won’t make up for that.”

Realization hits me in the face at her words. She’s right. I’m an idiot for thinking that a simple kiss would make her forget the shit she’s gone through over the past nine years.

Fuck.

I drop my arms, letting her feel free again. God, it’s hard trying to be the nice guy when all I want to do is throw her up against the shelf and fuck her until she’s screaming my name.

She notices the change, but she doesn’t move a muscle, just keeping her eyes on me, as if she’s challenging me.

“I know a kiss won’t make up for anything, but I hope you eventually forgive me. Let me start trying, Lainey.”

It takes her a moment to reply and I can see the wheels spinning in her head.

“How?” She draws out her question slowly.

“We can start small… I can take you out somewhere. Maybe to dinner?” I offer, desperately hoping that she’ll give me this chance. My heart hammers in anticipation as I wait for her answer.

She drops her gaze to her shoes and wipes her hands down her pants. “Greyson, we can’t.”

“Why? Give me one good reason why.”

“Only one? I could name about ten right now.” She taps her finger against her chin, pursing her lips. “Hmm, where to start. Let’s see, I’ll start with a giant, glaring issue—you drugged Lya, kidnapped her, held her hostage… Oh, not to mention, you had sex with her multiple times. Oh, and don’t forget you betrayed me nine years ago, making me feel worthless. I’d say those are pretty good reasons why this wouldn’t work.”

My chest tightens at her words. She’s right, I did all of those things—well, except for betraying her. If I could get her to sit down and talk with me, then I could explain everything.

“Lainey, let me take you out, please.” It’s weird hearing that word fall from my lips. I haven’t said please since I was a child, but now because of her, I’m saying it all the time. This girl has some kind of hold on me. Yesterday I even got down on my knees right here in the library and fucking begged her to talk to me.

Lainey shakes her head and squeezes her eyes shut. “No… No, Greyson.”

A deep sigh leaves my body. “Okay, then I just want to talk.”

“There’s nothing to say,” Lainey whispers, turning her attention back to her cart of books. I feel empty without her attention on me.

“There’s a lot to say. Just let me talk and you can listen.”

“I can’t do this right now. I’ve gotta get back to work. Maybe we can talk later. Goodbye, Greyson.” She turns and pushes her cart down the aisle, not even giving me a second glance as she focuses on the next book to put up. Watching her ass sashay away from me twists my stomach in knots. That didn’t go as planned.

I won’t give up though. Deep in her eyes, I could see that she wanted to give in—she’s curious.
