My stomach churns at the thought of her not coming. Maybe she changed her mind, or got caught by Lya or one of the others.

I can feel my skin heating from the building anxiety. She fucking agreed to meet me here.Is she rejecting me again? Was it the date? Did I push her too much by asking to sneak out?I haven’t felt this type of fear since my mom left me at seven years old. The feeling of uncertainty is eating at me.

A few minutes later, a small figure in all black runs toward my car.

Finally.

Lainey slides into the passenger seat. “Hey, sorry I’m late,” she says, through sharp pants.

I start the car, but don’t say a word. She drove me out of my mind being late just then. I’ve definitely never been normal, but I almost went full psycho. I don’t even know what to say to her. Just being around her in general makes me feel like I can’t control my emotions; everything is heightened when she’s close to me.

“Greyson? What’s up?” she asks, furrowing her brows.

“Why the fuck are you dressed like a burglar?” I demand angrily. I know I shouldn’t take my shit out on her, but fuck, it’s hard not to. She left me out here freaking out like a little pussy.

“Why are you being an asshole right now?” she fires back. She reaches up and pushes the hood back off of her head, allowing me to see her eyes. Her beautiful hazels staring back at me chip away at the anger I’m feeling about her being late.

Taking a deep breath, I try to calm down. If I keep acting like this, there’s a good chance she’ll get out and go back home. I can’t have that.

“Just buckle up, angel.”

“Are you mad at me?” The worried scrunch of her eyebrows could tear my heart in half.

I was freaking out. I was worried. I thought you didn’t want me.

“You were late. I thought you weren’t coming.”

“I’m sorry, Greyson,” she explains softly, taking my hand in hers. “I had to wait until Rian went to bed, which wasn’t until after midnight. He was in their office, which is right beside my room. I swear that man never sleeps.”

The feeling of her soft hand draws out the anger and calms me. “Okay, let’s just go.”

Lainey lets go of my hand to buckle her seatbelt, and the loss of her touch feels like a punch to the face. That quickly disappears when she reaches over and intertwines her fingers with mine, giving me the sweetest smile I’ve ever seen.

Damn, this girl. This girl is the key to saving me from my past.

I giveLainey the grand tour of my three-story house. Her eyes are wide in awe at the sleek decor and modern appliances.

“Holy shit! Lya’s house is nice, but this… this is beyond anything I could ever imagine.” She spins around in a slow circle once more, making sure she sees everything.

I give a soft chuckle as I lead her into the kitchen. “Want something to drink?”

“Sure, whatcha got?” she asks, even though she’s not looking at me, she's still busy taking in all the little details of my home.

“Iced tea, beer, vodka or whiskey. Take your pick, angel.”

“Tea is fine, thanks.” She strolls over to the mahogany shelf that sits between the kitchen and dining room, while I pour her a glass of tea. There are a lot of expensive trinkets on there, but nothing personal, much like the rest of the house.

“Did you grow up in this house?”

Her question takes me aback. It brings back the memory of how fast I sold my childhood home, after killing my father and inheriting it. I couldn’t stand to keep it. Thoughts of my father’s brutal beatings and my mother’s sadness before she left haunted me so much that I had to sell it.

“No, it’s not. I couldn’t stand the sight of that house, so I sold it and bought this.”

“I get that.” She sighs, running her fingers over the freshly polished wood shelf. “Why don’t you have pictures or anything in this amazing house?”

“This house is nice, but it doesn’t really mean anything. Not without someone to share it with,” I tell her, as I hand her a glass of tea.
