I don’t think his hostility is necessarily aimed at me, but I’m a constant reminder of how close he came to losing her. Damn, even just thinking about it, I can’t really blame him. From the way it sounds, Greyson was really unhinged. Like, badly unhinged. Psychotic even. Though honestly, he’s still a little like that...

“You good? Your eyes just went glassy, like you’re zoning out.” Rian gives me an intense stare, like he knows I’m thinking about something I shouldn’t be.

“Uh yeah, I was just thinking about what needs to be done at the library today.” The ease with which I’m able to make up lies these days is a little alarming. They just roll off my tongue as easily as breathing air. “Where are Lya and Zep? Shouldn’t we be going?”

“They’re coming into work late today. They have some stuff to do this morning.” Thiago murmurs, looking at Rian instead of me.

“What kind of stuff?” I ask curiously.

The energy in the room shifts, tension now radiating from both guys.

“Just some stuff for Cuttin’ the Sutton. Let’s go. Don’t want to keep the library waiting.” Rian’s response is short and quick, using that goofy name for the plan. Instead of arguing, I follow him and Thiago out to the G-Wagon and climb in.

The drive to the library is short and quiet, with nobody saying a word the entire way.

“Thanks for taking me, guys. I’ll see you later.” I’m practically out the door, slamming it shut before I’ve even finished my sentence.

Before we arrived, I was carefully looking at the cars lined up along each block. Sadness fills me as I didn’t see Greyson’s anywhere. He could’ve parked somewhere else or he might not even be coming today, but I can’t help feeling disappointed.

God, I really need to stop acting like a lovesick fool.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is not to get dependent on anyone. You never know what can happen, or who’s going to cross you in ways you never saw coming. Greyson and I are slowly starting to figure this whole thing out, but I’d be devastated if he pulled the rug out from under me, so I don’t want to let myself fall too hard, too fast.

Though it might be too late for that.

Walking into the library, I notice that Ms. Mabel is nowhere to be found. Usually she’s at the front desk when I arrive, so it’s strange to see it empty. There are a few people already at the tables in the front, but not as many as usual. I walk toward the back of the library, hearing soft whispers coming from where Greyson usually sits.

I creep down the row, trying to be as quiet as possible. The voices become louder as I get closer, and I recognize who they belong to.

“Do you think she’ll go for it? Is it too soon?” Greyson’s voice lacks his usually commanding presence. It’s unsure, but inquisitive.

“Honey, have you seen the way she looks at you? She might not know it yet, but that girl looks at you with wonder, with curiosity about what you two can be. She is enamored with you, but I can also tell she’s scared,” Ms. Mabel says in a soothing, motherly tone.

“I don’t want her to be scared. She’s had it bad for the last nine years. I don’t even know the full extent of it and I’m not sure how much you know, but it’d give regular people nightmares for days, if not years.”

What are they talking about? Clearly it’s something about me, but what is Greyson wanting to do? I knew these two were getting along, but I didn’t realize they were this close. Enough to be talking about some sort of future I have with Greyson.

Anxiety creeps up my body, wrapping itself around my throat, trying to claw its way out of me. Greyson and I just had sex for the first time last night, so whatever he’s talking about seems like it’s going to be another giant step for us. Needing to stop this before I hear any more, I try to make as much noise as possible walking the remaining distance between us.

“Hey you two, holding a secret club meeting back here?” I try to say jokingly, but Greyson’s eyes go wide and he looks frantically at Ms. Mabel.

“Oh you know, darling. I’ll snatch this one up if you leave him alone long enough. I think he’s starting to fall for me too. Better watch out, you might have some real competition now,” Ms. Mabel announces in her signature sassy tone, but all I can focus on is this secret they seem to be keeping right now.

“Is that so? Well, I guess you can have him.” I playfully bump my shoulder against Ms. Mabel’s.

“What am I, chopped liver? Just feeding me to the wolves?” Greyson demands in a faux accusatory tone.

“Hmm, we’ll see. Jury’s still out on that one.”

“Alright, I’ll leave you kids to it. Don’t want to ruin this lovely tender moment.” Ms. Mabel chuckles and heads back to the front of the library, leaving Greyson and I alone.

“Good morning, angel. You look divine,” he purrs, his gaze taking me in from top to bottom. Standing from his chair, he grabs me, slamming his lips down on mine. My body presses against his, and every nerve in my body lights on fire, as we fight for control. I wrap my arms around him, pulling him even closer to me. I can feel his already hard length pressing against my body.

Stepping back from Greyson’s embrace, I try to compose myself. I look deep into his heated eyes, noticing how light they look today.

“Well, good morning to you too.” My face feels flushed, and I adjust my top, trying to straighten it after that intense moment.

His eyes shine with lust. “How are you this morning?”
