It was intense, incredible, and I moaned and groaned as I squirmed and writhed on the bed.

When I came down from my sexual high, I lay on the bed, panting. I looked down at Ren, who smiled at me, looking more than satisfied.

“Let me please you,” I said, out of breath.

Ren shook his head and took my hand. He pulled me up, so we both stood. Ren wrapped his arms around me, pressing his body to mine, and kissed me.

“This was just about giving you pleasure. It isn’t about me.”

“But I want to please you,” I said.

Ren just kissed me again. He bent down and reached for the towel that still lay on the floor where he’d dropped it and handed it to me.

“I just wanted to let you know I’m okay,” he said.

I tucked the towel against my chest.

“Okay,” I replied in a small voice. He kissed me again before he walked to the door.

“Sleep well, Ellie.”

I was suddenly exhausted. I still had to go to dinner in the mess hall, but I wanted to sink back onto my pillows and bathe in the aftermath of the orgasm Ren had just given me.

Ilay on my bed with Ren, laughing at something he’d said. He was so relaxed when he was away from the demands of his palace life. He talked about his past without wincing at the recent death of his father, and being around him was a pleasure.

I’d only seen glimpses of the male he could be when royal responsibility didn’t weigh him down. But the more time we spent together, the more I saw a side of him I could resonate with.

There was no reason we could relate to each other, him and I. Ren was the most powerful king to ever rule Jasfin. I was just a human. We had nothing in common; not where we had come from, not where we were going, and not who we were.

And yet, being with Ren was…right.

“Do you want to know what I think?” I asked.

“Sure,” Ren said. “Tell me what you think.”

He played with my hand, our fingers interlinking, twisting around each other. We were touching, even though we lay apart from each other on the bed.

“I think…” I glanced up at him and stopped in the middle of my sentence. “What’s wrong?”

“What are you talking about?” he asked.

“Your eyes…”

His usually ice-blue eyes had turned red, the color of embers when the fire had died out. When I stared into them, I saw pits of darkness. I felt like I stood on the edge when I looked at him, like I was going to topple over.

And once that happened, I was going to fall forever…

I snapped my head around and squeezed my eyes shut.

“What’s the matter, Eleanor?” Ren asked. “Scared of the monsters under your bed?”

He gripped my shoulders and wrenched me around, and when I opened my eyes, Ren wasn’t in front of me anymore. Instead, it was a monster, with eyes like the burning pits of hell and skin like that of a lizard or a snake. The dark hair on his head was tangled and stuck up in tufts.

I jerked awake, breathing hard. I struggled to catch my breath. It felt like my chest was going to implode. I gulped air, but my body wouldn’t cooperate.

Something wasn’t right.
