“I can almost see the cogs turning.”

I wanted to know if hefeltit, too, but he didn’t say as much.

I snuggled further into the blankets. “I just have to switch off after a crazy night.”

“It’s a good idea to get some sleep,” Ren said.

I waited for him to ask me to go back to my room. He didn’t. Instead, he threw an arm over me and pulled me closer. Soon, his breathing became heavier, and he fell asleep. A peaceful slumber dragged me under, too.

When I woke up, Ren was gone. I was alone in his bed, still naked, and I felt vulnerable and shy. The sun streamed through the windows.

Damn it! I’d overslept.Again.

I jumped up and wrapped one of Ren’s robes around my body. I wouldn’t run through the palace in the oversized t-shirt—and nothing else—I’d worn when I got here. Last night, it had seemed okay in the darkness, but in the bright light of day, it was far too much like a walk of shame.

Although I felt no shame or regret about sleeping with Ren.

Just confusion.

I poked my head out of his room and looked right into Nylah’s golden eyes.

She smirked at me.

“Morning,” I said, rubbing my forehead with my fingertips. I wanted to blurt out that this wasn’t what it looked like, but it was exactly what it looked like. Besides, she was my friend. I had no reason to be embarrassed about sleeping with Ren.

“I was just about to come get you,” she said. “Did you sleep well?”

I nodded.

“Dex told me to let you know after a rough night last night, you’re granted the day off.”

I relaxed. I wasn’t in trouble for missing training, at least.

Ithadbeen a rough night. When I thought about what Ren and I had done, I blushed.

Nylah and I walked in silence to my quarters. She told me she would wait while I showered and changed, and when I was ready, we walked to the cathedral.

“Ren told me about your glowing,” Nylah said.

I glanced at her and blushed. “Did he tell you how and when it happened?”

She nodded. “It’s not a secret that he’s very fond of you, Ellie. You shouldn’t be shy about it. If the King chooses you, it’s a great honor.”

She was so solemn about it. But then her face split into a smile. “Was it amazing?”

I giggled and nodded. “He’s something else.”

Nylah giggled, too. “I’m glad it’s you, rather than that bitch.”

I smiled. So was I.

We walked into the cathedral and finally settled on the couches in front of the fireplace. Nylah watched the fire dance. The fireplace was perpetually lit, making interesting shadows along the gothic arched ceilings.

“All of this is so unfamiliar,” Nylah said. She furrowed her brow. “I feel like I should know the answers, but I’m completely out of my depth.”

“You haven’t ever heard of anything like this?” I asked.

She shook her head. “I’m sorry to say I have not. In all my years as a high priestess, it should be something I might have come across, or read about. Or…something.”
