I sank to my knees, all the energy gone out of me. A fine dust covered everything, and from the gaping cracks, a cold wind forced its way in.

“Ellie!” Ren cried out and caught me as I sagged to the floor.

32

Ididn’t know how long I’d been out for. When I opened my eyes, Ren sat on the floor, cradling me against his chest. He stroked my hair, rocking back and forth.

“Ellie!” he gasped when I looked up at him. “What the hell were you thinking?”

“That I would not let you die.”

He shook his head. “You nearly got yourself killed. What would I do then? What—”

I stared up at this male who was about to lose it over nearly losingme.

“I’m still here,” I said. “It’s not so easy to get rid of me.”

A laugh bubbled up in his throat, and his relief washed over me.

“No, I see that. You’re impossible to kill.”

He smiled at me, and I could have sworn I saw a shimmer of tears in his eyes. But he blinked it away.

“When you disappeared, I thought it was over. I thought I’d lost you. And my world ended, Ellie. Everything I’ve fought for, everything I’ve worked for… None of it matters if you’re not with me.”

“You’ve lived for centuries without me.”

He ran his fingers down my cheek. “Only because I didn’t know you. Now that I’ve tasted life with you, I can’t go back to how it was. The thought of losing you…” He shuddered at the horror he’d experienced, and waves of that horror flowed over me. I could sense his distress, how terrified he’d been of losing me.

I lifted my hand and touched his cheek.

“I’m empty without you,” he said. “Ellie, you’re everything.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” I told him. Ren and I belonged together. We were from different walks of life. He was Fae, and I was human. We had more obstacles than anyone to overcome to be together. But if it was what we both wanted, then I would fight every day to be at his side.

“You faced the monster,” Ren said.

“I would fight a thousand Lucias for you,” I answered.

He lowered his head and kissed me.

Dex ran into the room, a slew of warriors following him. They were bloodied and looked like they’d fought an entire war just to get into the fortress. Zita was among them, her face dirty, and blood was caked in her short blonde hair. She grinned at me when she saw me in the King’s arms.

“Looks like you guys have it under control in here.”

Nylah followed right behind them, and her eyes widened when she saw the surrounding carnage.

She trod carefully into the room, looking at everything as if studying a crime scene.

“There was a lot of magic here,” she said.

Ren nodded. “Yes. A lot of magic.” He didn’t take his eyes away from me. “Who knew you had it in you?”

“I don’t know what it was,” I said, my voice trembling.

“It’s who you are,” Nylah said. “You just needed a reason to unleash your power within.”

A reason. I’d had a hell of a reason to find what I was capable of. If I’d lost Ren, if he died, even if it was for me, I would never have been able to recover from that. I loved him.
