Who?I text back. The hot police officer who you obviously still like?

I do NOT like him!! Stop talking to him or he’ll never leave.

“What’s she saying about me?” Josh asks from behind his menu. He’s good. He picks up on the little things. I didn’t even think he was paying attention.

“Something about how much she still likes you.”

I feel a hard kick to my foot. “Nina!” I scold.

“She used to kick me too,” Josh says, setting his menu down. “After awhile you get used to it.” He picks up a fry from her plate and eats it. “Your burger’s getting cold,” he tells her.

“I’m busy,” she mutters, swiping through her phone.

“Whatcha looking up there?” He leans over so he can see her screen.

She moves back, hiding her screen from his view. “If you must know, I’m looking up ways to get rid of crazy ex-boyfriends who are stalking me.”

“Tell me his name and I’ll take care of it.”

I laugh, but Nina just rolls her eyes.

“Well, if you’re not going to eat this.” He picks up her burger and takes a big bite.

“Hey!” She swats at him. “That’s mine!”

“Go ahead.” He holds the burger out to her. “Have some.”

She snatches it from him. “Get your own.”

Lacey returns with Josh’s beer. “You decide yet?”

“Yeah. I’ll have what she’s having.” He points to Nina.

“It’s two for one burger night,” Lacey says.

“All the better. Give me two.”

She smiles at him. “I like a man with a big appetite.” She gives him a wink and walks off.

“Looks like Gladys may have some competition,” he says, then takes a drink of his beer.

I laugh, but Nina continues to ignore him.

“So…” Josh sets his beer down. “Anything new in town?”

“There’s a—” I stop before telling him about Kyle. I’m not sure why. Is it because I think he’s running from the law? If so, why would I be protecting him?

“What were you saying?” he asks.

“Um, I was just going to say that it’s been really busy at Kenny’s Garage. That’s where I work. It seems like everyone’s been taking their car in to be worked on this month.”

“Summer vacations,” he says. “Nobody wants their car breaking down during a long road trip.”

“Yeah, that’s probably true.”

“Speaking of vacations, Gladys said Mr. Miller left for the summer. She said he’s never left Kansas and now he’s living in Florida all summer.”

“Yeah. I guess he decided it was finally time to take a trip.”
