“I will.” She hurries off, grinning from ear to ear. I don’t know Lacey that well, but she seems nice. She went to high school with Nina but they weren’t friends. Lacey played volleyball and basketball so she hung out with the athletes. Nina has no athletic abilities and hates sports so she has nothing in common with Lacey.

Josh picks up his burger. “Guess I have a date for this weekend.”

Nina huffs. “Yeah, after just asking me to live with you.”

“You turned me down. I had to move on.”

“Which took all of two minutes.”

“Can’t waste time. I’m not getting any younger.” He bites into his burger.

I can’t stop laughing, watching these two. I love how he gives her shit. Most guys are afraid to, but not Josh.

“Let me out.” Nina pushes on his arm.

“Why? What do you need?”

“It’s none of your business. Now let me out.” She pushes harder on him but he doesn’t budge. He’s strong and a lot bigger than her. She’s tall but really thin, with scrawny arms that can barely lift anything. She could put all her weight into pushing on Josh and he still wouldn’t move.

“Are you going outside for a smoke?” I ask.

“No,” she answers in a defensive tone, gripping her purse. I see a pack of cigarettes peeking out the side.

“You’re still smoking?” Josh asks. “Then I’m definitely not letting you out.”

“I’ve been trying to quit.” She jabs him. “But then certain people stress me out and I crave a cigarette.”

“Those things aren’t good for you.”

“No shit?” She rolls her eyes. “Never heard that before.”

He looks at me. “Amazing I’d still go out with her, isn’t it?”

I burst out laughing, almost choking on my burger. Josh has a great sense of humor. If Nina doesn’t want him, maybe I should go out with him. The only problem is, I can’t stop thinking about Kyle. Why does my head keep going back to him? I know almost nothing about the guy. Just because there’s a spark between us doesn’t mean he’s right for me.

As we’re finishing dinner, Lacey drops off our checks. Josh takes them both.

“Dinner’s on me.” He drops some money on the table.

“Paying the bill won’t make me go out with you,” Nina says.

“I’m paying because I enjoyed having dinner with two beautiful women. If Sage hadn’t invited me to sit down, I would’ve had to eat by myself.” He turns to Nina. “And in case you forgot, I was asked out earlier so I can’t go out with you even if you wanted me to. I won’t date two women at once.”

“That’s very gentlemanly of you,” I say. “Isn’t it, Nina?”

“I need a smoke,” she mutters, pulling a cigarette from her purse.

Josh gets out of the booth. “I need to go over to Gladys’ house, then head back to the city.”

“Have a safe trip,” I tell him.

“I will. See you guys later.”

“Bye.” I’m the only one who says it. Nina is too busy searching around in her purse.

“I think I left my lighter in the car.” She takes handfuls of stuff from her purse and drops it on the table.

“What’s the deal with you and Josh?”
