“Nina’s making me, so yes.”

“I’m glad you have a friend there. And even though it’s not that exciting, I like that you’re in a safe small town. I don’t have to worry so much.”

I hope my mom never talks to Nina. She’ll tell her I’m living next to a serial killer.

I check the clock. Shit, it’s quarter to six and I’m not ready.

“Mom, I have to go. I have someone coming over soon and I haven’t even dried my hair.” I race into the bathroom.

“Who’s coming over?”

“Just a friend.” I search for the blowdryer.

“Nina’s coming over?”

“No, um…” I can’t find the blowdryer. Where did I put it? I go back in the bedroom.

“Then who is it?”

“It’s just this guy next door.” I find the blowdryer on the floor by my closet. My room’s a mess. I really need to clean it.

“What guy? You mean that old man who complains that your car is too loud?”

“No, he went to Florida for the summer. He’s renting his house out to this guy, Kyle. He doesn’t know anyone here so I invited him over.”

“How well do you know this boy?” she asks in her concerned mom voice.

“Mom, you don’t have to worry. I’ve met him a few times now and he’s not some crazy lunatic.” I set my phone down and put it on speaker so I can work on my hair.

“Just be careful.”

“I will. He’s going to be here soon. I have to get ready. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Send me a text goodnight so I know your date went okay.”

“It’s not a date, but yes, I’ll send you a text.”

“Okay. Bye, honey.”

Even my mom thinks Kyle is dangerous. But to be fair, she thinks every guy I go out with is dangerous.

But I’m not going out with Kyle. He’s not looking for a girlfriend. We’re just two people who are new in town, getting to know each other. That’s all this is.

So why am I so nervous?

CHAPTERSEVEN

SAGE

At six,Kyle arrives at my door, his arms loaded up with grocery sacks.

“Delivery,” he jokes, a big smile on his face. When I first met him, he was so grouchy I didn’t think he ever smiled. But the more I’ve been around him, the more I see that smile.

“Let me help.” I take some of the sacks and walk through the tiny living room to the kitchen. It’s a small house, with just two bedrooms, a living room and an eat-in kitchen.

He sets the bags down on the counter. “I’ll go get the rest.”

“There’s more? You brought in four bags. I had like five items on my list.”
