“But it’s not somethingIwould do.” He yanks the paper from me. “And I’m insulted you would think otherwise.” He looks over the invoice.

“Sorry,” I mutter.

“I’ll let it slide this time,” he says, glancing up from his invoice, his lips creeping up.

“This time?” I huff. “Meaning what? I’m in trouble if I ever offend you again?”

“Yes,” he answers, trying to be serious.

“What are you going to do to me?” I ask, my face heating up because that sounded totally naughty, which is not how I meant it to sound.

“I’m not sure yet,” he says casually, as if he didn’t take my comment in a sexual way, but the spark in his eyes tells a different story. There’s that flutter again, but now it’s not in my stomach. It’s lower, in a place it shouldn’t be when I’m here at work with a guy I’m not dating. A guy I still don’t know that well, despite spending all of last night with him.

I wish he’d tell me more about himself, but he hasn’t, and I get the feeling he won’t. The only thing I know for sure is that he’s just as attracted to me as I am to him. And maybe, if this becomes just a summer fling, then the fact that he wants me is all I need to know.

CHAPTERELEVEN

SAGE

Kyle setsthe invoice down and picks up his wallet. As he opens it, I see it’s full of hundred dollar bills, even more than he had this morning. What’s the deal with this guy? Does he just walk around with a stash of hundreds?

He takes one out and hands it to me. “That should cover it.”

“Do you always pay in cash?”

“I don’t like credit cards,” he says. “I don’t like having debt.”

“Most people don’t, but can’t really avoid it.”

His smile disappears as he shoves his wallet in his pocket. “Is that it?”

“Um, no, I need to get your change.” I hurry over to the drawer where we keep the cash.

“Forget it. I don’t need change. It’s yours. A tip for good service.”

I sigh. “Are you only doing this because of what I told you last night?”

“What did you tell me?” His brows furrow. “Was it the part about you finding me cute? If so, then yes, that’s the reason. I’m giving you $20 to thank you for the compliment. It’s been a long time since someone’s called me cute. I think it was probably the seventh grade.”

I swat his arm. “Stop teasing me about that. I was being nice.”

“Why are you hitting me?’

“You were being sarcastic. And you know I wasn’t referring to that.”

He grins, which is both annoying and hot. Why does he have to be so damn good-looking?

“What are you smiling at?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest.

“You know what that was?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

“What we just did. That was our first fight. Our first couple’s argument.”

I can’t help but smile at that. He called us a couple, and even though he’s just playing along with our fake arrangement, I like the sound of us being a couple.

“We’re not dating,” I remind him. “And that wasn’t a fight. I just asked a simple question and wanted an answer, and as usual, you didn’t give me one. That’s really annoying, by the way. Why can’t you just answer questions the way normal people do?”
