“Okay, fine, so there’s that, but you could find plenty of other guys that are hot that aren’t all mysterious and weird.”

“Kyle’s not weird. And he’s not mysterious. He’s been telling me more about himself, and I’m sure he’ll tell me even more if we spend more time together.”

“I doubt that,” she mutters.

I don’t know why she hates him so much. She hasn’t even met him.

“So what happened last night?” she asks. “You had dinner, made out, and then what?”

“We hauled the couch out, then opened all the windows to get rid of the smell. Turns out the couch is what was making the house stink. Not that it smells great now, but it’s better than it was.”

“And then he went home?”

“Um, no. He ended up spending the night.”

“You already slept with him?” she yells.

“No! He stayed in the living room. I wanted the house to air out but I didn’t want to sleep there alone with the windows open all night.”

“So you invited a serial killer to stay with you?”

“Would you stop calling him that? He’s not a serial killer. He’s a writer, and not a psychopathic killer writer. Just a writer. But since you refuse to believe that, I’m bringing him to the firehouse event on Saturday.”

“You’re supposed to go with me! And now you’re ditching me for some guy?”

“I’m not ditching you. We’re all hanging out together. The three of us.”

“Great. So I’ll be going on your date with you. I’m sure he’ll love that.”

“He knows it’s not a real date. And this will give you a chance to question him to death, although I’ll tell you right now that he’s not great about answering questions. He doesn’t like talking about himself.”

“Because he’s hiding something.”

“That’s not why. But if it is, I’m sure you’ll find out what that something is. If anyone can get the truth out of someone, it’s you.”

She sighs. “Okay. He can go with us, but I’m going to grill him all night.”

I laugh. “I’m sure you will.”

“Maybe I’ll sic Josh on him. He’s good at reading people. He’ll know if this guy is being real or not.”

“You can’t ask Josh. He’ll be on a date,” I remind her to see if she’ll show even a hint of jealousy. She tried to hide it the other night when Lacey asked Josh out, but I could see her jealously brewing.

“With Lacey?” she scoffs. “That’s not a date.”

“Then why did he call it that?”

“Because that’s what Lacey wants it to be. Josh was just being nice.”

“Lacey wasn’t around when he called it a date.”

I hear her take a deep breath. “Then maybe it is. I really don’t care. It doesn’t matter to me. I’ve moved on.”

She hasn’t moved on. I saw her with Josh. She still likes him, and there was definite jealously in her tone just now. She doesn’t want him going out with Lacey. She still wants him for herself. Maybe on Saturday night she’ll be so busy watching Josh that she’ll leave Kyle alone.

I doubt that’ll happen. In fact, I’m worried she’s going to badger Kyle so much that he’ll want to leave. But before he does, I’m kind of hoping she’ll get more out of him than I’ve been able to so far. I still want to find out more about him and Nina may be my best chance of doing that.
