Page 69 of If I Could

“Let’s go.” He turns and walks to the door.

I follow him outside and watch as he locks up. He’ll only be gone a few minutes so I don’t know why he’s bothering to lock it. I also don’t know why he’s acting so strange. I thought after dinner we’d end up kissing, or maybe do more than that, but he hasn’t even touched me all night.

When we get to my house, he backs up next to the garage. I park my car, and when I get out, I see Kyle is already loading the couch in the truck.

“Want some help?” I ask as he lifts up the couch.

“If you could, then yeah.”

I lift up the other end and we slide it into the bed of the truck.

“Thanks for getting rid of it,” I say as he closes the tailgate.

He nods. “See you later.”

He gets in his truck and drives off, leaving me in the dark driveway. I forgot to leave the house lights on and now I can’t see. As I search my purse for my house key, headlights come up behind me. I turn around and see Wilson’s truck pulling up. Kyle jumps out, leaving the truck on.

“Sorry,” he says, coming up to me.

“For what?” I ask, squinting from the bright headlights of the truck.

“I should’ve made sure you got inside.”

“Oh, um, that’s okay. I’ll be fine.”

“You got your key?”

“Yeah.” I hold it up.

He takes it from me and walks to my door and opens it. He hands me the key. “Go ahead.”

I walk past him into the house. “You didn’t have to come back.”

“I had to make sure you were safe. It’s dark out here.”

“Well, thanks. That was nice of you.”

He pauses, remaining outside my door. “I’m not dangerous, Sage. I’d never do anything to hurt you.”

I just nod, feeling odd we’re even having this conversation. Was I acting afraid of him earlier? I didn’t think I was, but maybe I did.

“Goodnight.” He leans down and kisses my cheek.

“Goodnight.”

I close the door and lock it behind me, then hear his truck pulling away. As I’m walking to the kitchen to set my purse down, my phone rings. It’s Nina.

“Hey,” I say, answering it.

“Is he there?”

“No. Why?”

“You didn’t answer my texts earlier so I assumed he was either over there or he killed you.”

“You thought he killed me but didn’t bother to check that I was okay?”

“I didn’t think he killed you, but I was starting to get worried when I didn’t hear from you. So what were you doing?”
