“No, don’t.” I look up at Kyle. “Getting into a fight with him will make people hate you, even if Jesse is the one who starts it.”

“So if he takes a swing at me I’m just supposed to stand there and take it?”

“Just try to avoid it. If he starts talking to you, just walk away.”

“And if he tries something with you? Tries to touch you? You really think I’m just going to stand here and do nothing?”

Nina’s watching us, her eyes going between Kyle and me. She can tell from the concern in his voice how protective he is of me, a clear sign he has feelings for me. Now she’s going to think Kyle and I are more than friends and I’m going to get a lecture about how I’m setting myself up to get hurt.

“We should go sit down,” I say, walking toward one of the tables.

Nina and Kyle follow. Kyle sits next to me with Nina across from us.

“Do you want to get food now or later?” I ask.

“Later,” Nina says, her eyes fixating on something behind me.

I turn and see Josh by the food tables, handing a plate to Lacey. Josh is wearing jeans and a black t-shirt that fits tight to his chest. He must be lifting weights because he didn’t look that muscular in the pictures Nina has from when they were dating. She still has those photos on her phone. When I ask her why she hasn’t deleted them, she says she hasn’t gotten around to it, as if it’s a time-consuming task to press the delete button.

Lacey has on a low-cut frilly pink blouse and denim mini skirt. The top and skirt don’t really go together but she doesn’t seem like someone who has great fashion sense. I would know because I don’t either, although tonight I think I did an okay job, but I copied this look off a fashion website.

“That shirt doesn’t go with the skirt,” Nina says, tapping her nails on the plastic picnic table.

“What are we talking about?” Kyle asks.

“Josh’s date,” I tell him. “They’re behind us at the food tables.”

“Why would he drive all this way to go out with her?” Nina asks. “She’s not even his type.”

“Maybe he came here for you.” I smile. “To make you jealous.”

“If so, it’s not working. I’m not jealous.”

“You sure about that?” Kyle asks in a kidding tone.

She leans toward him across the table. “Are YOU sure that your relationship with Sage is fake and not real?”

He looks at me and smiles. “No comment.”

Nina sits back, folding her arms over her chest. “I’m not jealous. I don’t care who he dates. Josh and I are ancient history.”

Kyle glances at the line of guys waiting for drinks. “Should I get us something from the bar?”

“I’ll take a beer,” I say.

“Whiskey straight up for me,” Nina says, her eyes going to Josh again.

“Be right back.”

When Kyle’s gone, Nina leans toward me across the table. “I can’t believe him.”

“Kyle?”

“No! Josh! You don’t seemeflaunting a date in front ofhim. He’s so inconsiderate.”

“If you had a date you would’ve had no problem bringing him tonight, and you would’ve paraded him in front of Josh to make Josh jealous.”

“I would not,” she insists.
