Not that I knew where I would go or what would become of me once I left the city.

We continued up the hill and were nearly all the way to the gate when I was shocked by Dmitri’s sudden appearance and call of, “Get moving, pup! Or get out of my way.”

He came striding up the path behind me and Hayk, his face set in a frown. The brightly-colored clothing of Good Port he’d been given looked completely out of place on him, which only made my skin crawl more at the sight of him. He looked to be on some sort of mission as well, marching determinedly past me and Hayk and on to the Hakobyan estate gate.

“Where have you been?” I asked following after him. “You were gone when I woke up this morning.”

Hayk kept close to my side, and I was a little too aware of his look of surprise. “Is that Dmitri?” he asked, almost incredulous.

“Yes,” I muttered, my face heating with shame.

“Get out of my way,” Dmitri growled at Lefric and the others as they reached the gate.

One of Lord Vikhrov’s servants was stationed at the gate, and he opened it to let us all in before anyone had to knock or ask for entrance. Dmitri stormed right past him, continuing on to Olympus’s house. The rest of us followed.

“Wait,” the gate guard stopped us when we were inside the estate compound. “Who are these two?” He frowned at Billie and Hayk.

“Oh, they’re my friends,” Lefric said with a smile. “Billie and Hayk. Olympus knows them. I think Lord Vikhrov does too.”

The guard shook his head. “No one who is not associated with the household is allowed in or out of the estate for the foreseeable future. Lord Vikhrov’s orders.”

I glanced to Hayk. I didn’t want him to be kicked out of the estate. I wanted him to stay near me.

Which was exactly the opposite of what I’d thought I wanted two minutes before.

“But they’re my friends,” Lefric said with an exasperated sigh. He lit up a moment later, then said, “And they might have valuable information about whoever is spreading rumors that Olympus and I had Gregorius killed.”

The guard either wasn’t aware that those rumors were circulating, or he was surprised that two whores might have information everyone within the estate would need.

We were also saved when Magnus and Olympus strode down the hillside toward us.

“What seems to be the trouble here?” Olympus asked as they approached.

“I don’t know if I should let these two in,” the guard told Olympus, gesturing to Hayk and Billie. “They’re not from the estate.”

“They’re Lefric’s friends,” Olympus said, grinning heatedly at both Billie and Hayk. “I’ve been meaning to ask them to come up and spend the night.”

Lefric laughed out loud, his face going red.

Heat rushed through me as well, but of a different sort entirely.

“Seriously, you need to stop being so jealous,” Hayk murmured against my ear. “There’s enough of me to go around, and I’m particularly interested in spending a night with you.”

I flinched away from him, even as my prick pressed more insistently against my trousers.

“I don’t want to spend the night with you,” I muttered.

“I thought you said you didn’t like lying,” Hayk fired back with a grin.

When I scowled at him, he bit his lip and winked at me.

I snapped to face Olympus and Magnus again.

“I remember Lefric’s friends,” Magnus said, his smile sly and calculating. “I remember thinking that they are the sort of friends I would like my Peter and Neil to have.”

“It’s always good to make friends,” Neil said, striding forward, along with Peter, and embracing Magnus.

“Make new friends, but keep the old,” Magnus said, planting a wet kiss on Neil’s lips, then turning to Peter to finish the rhyme. “One is silver and the other is gold.” He grabbed Peter around the waist and pulled him in for a sloppy kiss as well.
