I didn’t know how to get out of the situation. I could feel tensions rising again as Dmitri and Hayk stared each other down. But before anything could happen, there was a knock on the door, followed by Billie stepping into the room.

“Mia told me this was your room. Sorry to disturb but Lefric wants—”

She stopped cold, her mouth hanging open, when she saw the standoff between the three of us.

Dmitri whipped around, glaring daggers at her. “Who are you?” he demanded, then went straight into, “Get out of my room!”

“That’s my sister,” Hayk said, climbing off the bed and rushing to stand protectively by Billie’s side.

My first instinct was to feel abandoned, to feel like Hayk had chosen Billie over me. But something in the heated ferocity in Hayk’s eyes as he stared back at me filled me with confidence instead. He’d only left me because he knew I could stand on my own, so dammit, I would.

“What kind of a piece of shit shouts at an innocent woman who has only come bearing a message from my friend?” I demanded, scooting around so I could step off the bed and stand toe-to-toe with Dmitri. “What kind of a coward vents his anger at women instead of where it belongs?”

Dmitri’s eyes went wide—first with anger, then as if he were impressed. It wasn’t the effect I’d wanted. He gazed at me with lust, as if he wanted me even more now.

“She interrupted,” he said after too long of a pause. “I dislike being interrupted in the middle of enjoying myself.”

I clenched my jaw so tight it hurt. Was he throwing what he’d interrupted between me and Hayk back in my face?

I was too angry to continue the argument, so I turned to Billie instead and asked, “What does Lefric want?”

Billie watched the entire confrontation with a little too much excitement. “First, he wants you to come down to lunch before Lord Vikhrov’s servants take it all away. But more importantly, he wants me and Hayk to look at the book of spies.”

“Book of spies?” Dmitri growled. “What the fuck is that?”

I wasn’t about to tell him.

“You two go ahead and get a look at the book,” I said. “I’ll just finish up with Dmitri, and I’ll be down before they take lunch away.”

“Anton, I won’t leave you like this,” Hayk insisted, moving away from Billie and toward me.

He probably thought that was an ordinary reaction, but it startled me so much my heart was beating in my throat in no time. How long had I waited to hear someone say they wouldn’t abandon me? But it was the worst possible time. I had to deal with Dmitri myself.

“I’ll be right down,” I said, somehow being just as firm with Hayk as I intended to be with Dmitri.

Bless him, but Hayk nearly smiled. His mouth twitched, and the emotions that glittered in his eyes were amusement and…pride?

“If you’re sure you can handle him,” he said, turning back to Billie. He paused, then said, “On second thought, I know you’ll be fine. I’ve seen the size of that one’s prick, and I wasn’t impressed. He’s all swagger and no substance.”

Dmitri snarled. “This coming from a man who exists on a steady diet of cum.”

“What can I say?” Hayk spread his arms wide. “I’m a connoisseur.”

Billie snorted with laughter. I wasn’t sure she would have if she’d known everything that had happened in the last hour.

“Just go,” I told them, trying to sound kind. “This won’t take long.”

“That’s what I hear about him,” Hayk said, giving Dmitri one last dismissive look before turning back to Billie.

He put his arm around her shoulder and walked her to the door. Before he left, he glanced back at me, as if to make certain I’d be alright. I nodded to him, and he and Billie left.

Dmitri huffed and shook his head. “You’d better watch your sweetheart. He was awfully friendly with that woman.”

“Weren’t you listening? That’s his sister,” I said flatly, crossing my arms. “And don’t bother making another crack about how he’s a whore. I know he’s a whore. I met him at the whorehouse. And it isn’t like you haven’t fucked more men than you can remember yourself.”

Dmitri stared hard at me. “Look who has suddenly decided to grow a pair of balls.”

“What do you want from me, Dmitri?” I shouted, too frustrated to play nice. Dmitri had ruined the most wonderful moment of my life, and I was not going to let him get away with it.
