When they got home that night Mark was even more disturbed. After they had settled just down into her room he started with the questions as soon as Carolyn walked into the living room.

“Is that normal?” mark asked. “I wasn't really around my first wife while she was pregnant. I did a lot of traveling and I spoke to her on the phone where she told me everything was good. I don't ever remember her acting the way Jess is acting. “

Carolyn was looking for the words to be diplomatic but objective.

“Pregnancy is different for every woman,” she said as she got ready for bed.

Mark came up behind her and laid his head on her shoulder.

“Caroline we're going to get through this.”

Carolyn looked at Mark standing behind her in the large mirror in the living room. The mirror was an antic and Caroline had always thought it odd to have one in the living room but when you looked into it you could see behind you.

She knew that Marc believed exactly what he was saying. The problem was they don't other girls in a woman's body who was pregnant. Caroline wasn't sure if he was ready to see his little girl as all grown up. However, the one thing she had promised mark when they got back together was that she would always tell him the truth and it was going to start here.

“You know there was always some bad blood between her and me about your divorce” Carolyn said. “it's always been her thought that the reason why you didn't stay married was my fault,” Carolyn said.

Mark shook his head.

“Maybe she believed that when she was younger, but she's grown now she'll know the difference. even if there wasn't doubt she asked me three times and I've told her I divorced her mother because it wasn't fair to stay with her know I loved another woman.”

Carolyn looked at him incredulously.

“Mark, I hope you chose different words than those otherwise this could be a very long pregnancy.”

“Oh, come on Caroline she’s no child. Those days are past us. She’s a mother to be now. Those days are over,” Mark guffawed as he stepped away from Caroline and went to sit on the loveseat. Caroline turned to see him and went to sit next to him. Caroline needed to find a way to make Mark see that people didn’t get over things just because you wanted them to.

“Daughters are funny creatures when it comes to their fathers,” Caroline said. “I want us to provide a good place for just to be able to rest.”

Mark nodded.

“I agree I want the same thing. I'm just saying the woman that was in the car with us tonight did not seem to be my same predictable lovable girl.”

Caroline wanted to scream because she's not a girl anymore.

“She's staying for a couple of days and then she's going to close up her place and stay here for the remainder of her pregnancy. Maybe during that time she'll be able to make some friends and we can go ahead and introduce her around town. mark you need to prepare yourself though. she's a mother now. She needs to think about tomorrow. She needs to think about how is she going to support herself and where she's going to live.”

Mark leaned back and looked at Caroline.

“where she's going to live? don't you think she should stay with us until she gets herself settled?”

Carolyn we did trying to find the right words. this was the beginning of her nightmare.

“I want to be there to support her Mark, but I want to make sure that we don't accidentally become a crutch for her.”

“The baby's not even here yet how can she be a crutch?” mark asked incredulously. sensing that mark was not as open as she had originally thought Caroline took a step back.

“We're jumping the gun anyway. let's wait until the baby gets here and then we'll figure out what we're going to do. however, she's only in the second trimester she should think about getting a job,”

“A job? I don't know Caroline it's not like we don't make enough -”

Caroline placed her hand top of marks.

“It's not about how much money we make. She needs the people down to feet, right”?

Caroline could see mark like very slowly. This had all the makings of catastrophe. mark pulled her back into his arms and then rested his chin on top of her head.

“We're going to work this out. I didn't wait all of this time to get you back into my life to have it fall apart. we're going to work this out.”
